Shadow Grey (character)

2020.09.12 03:35 firelock_ny Shadow Grey (character)

I've been creating some NPC heroes (that could also be handed out to my players for PC's in one-shots), mainly to get a feel for the system to prep for my campaign start.
Here's Shadow Grey, a member of a supernatural-based hero group called the Salem Seven. She went on a bachelorette party camp out and some kind of mysterious shadow beast attacked their campsite. She fought it off with the unexpected aid of a wolf spirit that she somehow summoned and it merged with her soul - her friends were saved but scared out of their minds, not just by their attacker but by what she became to save them.
Diane Allen is the eldest daughter of a wealthy family in Providence, Rhode Island that traces their wealth back to the American Revolution. Her marriage to the eldest son of a New York financial dynasty was supposed to be a merger of old-money power and "new money" (only dating back to the Gilded Age) energy. Diane's interest in the matter was secondary - she had some affection for her betrothed, but knew that all her life she'd been groomed like a show pony for the upcoming big production.
Now that she's bonded with a wolf spirit - the "Wolf Goddess", as she sometimes calls it - Diane has had a wild ride. Her family and (now-ex) fiancé were exposed to the full power of the wolf spirit and think she's some kind of monster. She's fled from the high-society social whirl that was once her whole life and she's searching for a new purpose.
A band of mystical misfits took her in and encouraged her to use her new powers to protect the world from threats like the shadow beast she faced that night. She feels like the wolf spirit is seeing them as her new pack and carrying her along into bonding with them as family, whether she's willing or not.
Diane Allen appears as a normal young woman with short dark hair and blue eyes that unexpectedly flash to wolf-like gold when she's angry or upset. She has a compelling aura of confidence about her that makes her both intimidating and extremely attractive. When she lashes out at people there's a mystic expression of the wolf spirit that can make people see her as a monstrous beast even afterwards - they'll objectively know that she appears as a young human woman, but they'll still see her as a mythic monstrous wolf.
In combat Diane is a supernaturally fast and strong opponent, striking with bestial savagery and a knack for "pack tactics" teamwork with her allies. She's hard to hit, hard to hurt and always seems to come back for more. Her past as a debutante fades away when danger arises. She sometimes feels like she's in conflict with the savage impulses of the wolf spirit within her.

When she achieves a Critical Hit in combat or three or more successes on an Intimidation check her target sees her as a monstrous wolf, and sees her as such afterwards even though they know that she appears as an attractive young woman. This may provide circumstance bonuses but also complications.
25 Equipment Points: contribution to the Salem Seven headquarters in Salem, Massachusetts.
Complications: Enemies: Diana's family wants to capture her and find a way to "save" her. Diane's ex-fiancé sees her as a monster and wants to destroy her. Her family and ex-fiancé aren't super-powered, but they are from powerful wealthy families.
Prejudice: Diane is seen as a werewolf by many people, with the superstitious fears that come with that.

2020.09.10 17:33 KennyOmegaXMan I'm a [31M] who's never had any romantic relationship in my entire life. What can I do to change that?

I happen to be a 31-year-old man who's never had any romantic relationship in my entire life I recently turned 31 this September. At times I feel hopeless that I will ever have a relationship with a woman, and fantasize about how it would be. And getting older doesn't help as I fear that I would be more ostracized the older I get without any history of a relationship.
Here's some back story about my personal self: I'm from Massachusetts and lived here all my life near the Rhode Island border. I guess I'm labeled a nerd because that what I've been called since I grew up with video games and nerd culture. I do go to conventions like PAX East and Comic-Con here. I went alone for the first time ever in recent years and cosplayed fully as a video game character Snake from Metal Gear. And it was a different experience. So I'm not afraid of trying things as I have aged as I would have never gone alone up to Boston to an event like that prior with anxieties I have faced. I don't talk with people openly about this and keep it to myself so I have to get it out. So this may be a lot to read and I understand that.
I'm also a smaller person in stature with being skinny growing up so I was teased by family about that. So I did join the gym in 2018 at my school but was never so serious about it. And didn't have much help to learn things and need that reassurance I'm doing it right. And recently I signed up for an actual gym and will be using a trainer.
Back in my childhood, I was always the "quiet" one. Not by choice. I was always assigned that title so I kept quiet. I still get called that and not sure why as this is the way I am. I'm not sure if it could have been to the way I was raised as I didn't go out really and my parents weren't so good and abusive. My dad was physically abusive to my mom and brother, as his dad was brutal to him in Portugal. So I was always nervous and still am to an extent. My mom has an addiction issue with gambling and really messed up my path as she would steal the money I worked for to fund her habits for many years. So I am set back compared to others my age but finally reaching my success with my career only starting last year in the IT field. But either way, my parents made me insecure about my feelings and I always kept to myself with fears of being judged and they were in control of my life up until my 20s. I don't talk with them really at this point as it's hard to put past what they have caused me to be stuck.
I didn't get help for any of this until 2016 as I did a post on Reddit for help and therapy was recommended. I've come so far with going back to school, driving on highways, and so many smaller things that affected me not being able to do. I've even brought in my own mother to therapy but she still never fully apologized and even denied any wrongdoing she did. But I'm fine that I just want my personal life to flourish. I've been with female therapists since then for a total of two different ones. I had to leave my first for insurance issues after going for a year. The other I decided to switch as I was going to her since 2017 up until early this year and felt no progress was made with my issue with never having a relationship. And it is more of a male issue that I am a man looking for a woman. So a different experience and mostly better to have a male therapist's point of view for this.
I know very few people personally as I only hang out with close cousins. Most of the others I only talk online with but never had friends I went out with regularly since they don't seem to do anything. So I never went out much and I don't drink alcohol or smoke weed. So it's tough knowing where to find anyone in these current times but it won't even matter if there was no virus. I'd still be stuck here in this spot even without the virus.
Onto my dating life, I've only dated one woman very shortly, about a month just last year. She was the first and only person I dated and it happened in September right when I turned 30. We met off Hinge, the dating app. She happened to message me first with a Hi and my name! She was really into me with the conversation and I was super surprised as I don't have that experience with my time with dating apps. She wasn't exactly a nerdy type also. Anyway, we agreed to meet for a coffee date after about 2 weeks of talking in Providence. I was very nervous as this was going to be my first date ever at 30. I dressed as fancy as I could and she did compliment that. I was pacing for some time as I was so nervous as I awaited her to arrive. And she finally arrived and gave each other a quick hug which made the nervousness tone down. Things went great and we talked for hours despite this being foreign to me. She was awkward at times so I didn't think much of it. Then we said our goodbyes and hugged each other. I was so happy I finally had my first date ever, it was unreal and I remember it so much. I did text her right when I got home as a follow-up and she agreed and liked that it was good. I was even more surprised as I thought I was bad since I had no reference for dating till then.
We agreed to meet again after seeing the pumpkin carvings at the local zoo during October and an impromptu dinner as she texted me if I wanted to get food right about leaving. That’s how inexperienced I am not asking for dinner after that date. It was all amazing to me that these kinds of things were happening, going out with someone, and having dinner. It was something that was so unreal to me. I offered to pay also and she was greatly appreciative of the night as she wanted to cover herself.
So this is where things started to change and finding out more about her. We were planning to meet once again during the week after work. We were texting about it in the AM and she stopped replying. But when it was the end of my workday she finally got back to me saying she passed out at an appointment and got a concussion. So I didn't assume I was going to meet up that night at all so I went home. We texted more later and she became erratic because I didn't come to see her like at almost midnight during a workweek. She became more and more upset. She was giving me an ultimatum to either visit her or whatever was happening between us would end. She became more and more upset. Then she was calling me as we never talked over the phone and she was absolutely terrible to me, swearing at me, telling me I was stupid, and so on, and she told me where to go for nothing I did wrong.
She wasn't the same person I met on the dates we had. It made me so upset I was taking this all in from her call and I never said anything bad to her. She was absolutely a wreck and I tried telling her I'm not sure why she was acting that way. So she hung up after screaming at me. Then again she was texting me to come to her address which she gave thought text or it was over. So at this point, it would have been foolish since it's already midnight and she lashed out at me and still wants me to come to visit her after her concussion. So she called one again and it made me so sad that the only woman so far to give me a chance was treating me like shit. I then told her what would my therapist think of you as I mentioned her to my therapist since dating is something that is focused on during sessions. I opened up about me never having a partner and she was my first date ever and I don't know why she's acting this way and it hurt me.
I guess I calmed her down enough and she wasn't so bad to me. She opened up about herself and she said the concussion caused her to act that way. My therapist later didn't agree and said she saw many red flags with her. Well, we talked into the AM over the phone that night as she told me that she suffers from a rare illness called EDS, and from that illness she has 30 other diseases. I couldn't believe it since you can't see it by looking at her. She told me she is always sick going to appointments and needs major surgery often and she soon was going soon a few weeks later to major neck fusion. I felt for her but still, I didn't think how she treated me was right over the phone that night. So the following day I stopped replying to her.
The following day she was texting me and was worried about me and was thinking I ghosted her but that's something I don't do. I had a therapy session that day I talked to my therapist about it. She did say again that there were many red flags and it was sad that she’s a very ill person and it was my personal choice if I continued talking with her after that. She actually called me during my session and left an apology voicemail for her behavior. And said she regrets acting that way and adored me so far and wanted to continue dating. And text replies mentioning that. So I did reply talking about how my therapist said to set boundaries as that behavior was no healthy and unwanted. She was still kind of upset I brought her up during therapy and texted me her medical papers that yes she wasn't lying about her illness.
Later that week we did agree to meet for dinner and a movie at the mall in Providence. I came early and there was a miscommunication and she was waiting elsewhere in the mall for me and once again her attitude started changing in the texts. I found her and she wasn't seeming to me that she wasn't happy at all based on her face. And she did have that concussion earlier in the week. We sat down for dinner and I wasn't sure how to approach her being as I was afraid she was going to lash out in public and I'm nervous when someone starts shouting at me and it shuts me down. So I barely was saying anything to her at all. Since I didn't know what she was going to do if I said the wrong thing. So after a while, she became upset and was saying this is awkward us not talking and saying I have communication issues. And I don't listen to her and her ex was the same was and they went to couple’s therapy and called me an INFJ over and over. And she got up off her chair and was thinking to just go home after that and I said you are welcome to. I wasn't putting any argument as I'm not the type of person to fight. So she didn't eat her food at all and ended up throwing it out as the mall was closing and the movie was almost starting. So she offered to just watch the movie and we'll talk about what happened another time. So we did watch a terrible movie name JEXI which I had no interest in. She offered to pay for the movie and popcorn as I did for her in the past. I still wasn't talking much with her during the movie as I was afraid if she will lash out. But watching a movie with her was another huge accomplishment as I never did that with a woman as a date.
So this is where more things got interesting. So after the movie, we were leaving and down the escalator, there was an old man that happened to fall down it and his leg was bleeding all over the floor. People were just gathering, and one called 911 for help. She then ran down the escalator to the scene to assist with him. She took her sweater off her back to make a tourniquet for him. She happened to have first aid classes. She didn't want to leave until he was gone by paramedics. She seemed super panicky and I didn't know what to do at that point. I offered her my coat as she only had a tank under her sweater and she declined. We finally walked away when the man was rolled away and there was a large pool of blood near him. So on the way she was super lost and saying she was about to have a panic attack so I gave her a hug to calm her down and she said: "thank you". I walked her to her car in the big parking garage and there was a car driving behind me and she pulled me in as she was afraid I was going to get hit. I was saying it was amazing to see what she did with the man as a hero like that and she told me that sweater had sentimental value and it went to better use to help him.
So on the way to her car, I asked from the help of online prior to what I should do at this point of dates, I said "may I kiss you?" She took off her glasses and she leaned her back against her car as she has balance issues with her spine surgeries. And we pulled each other in and we then made out. It was so super unreal. I felt like I was dreaming. I couldn't believe it was finally happening. I was so into it and super passionate about it. We would kiss and she would bite my lower lip and pull away and look into each other's eyes and do it again. It was something out of a movie. I was caressing her body, her hair, and from her illness, I believe it was her vertebrae was dislocating as her neck in the upwards position. She was in a bit of pain and I was apologizing if I was causing it as I was so into our kiss, my first kiss. She didn't mind and were giving each other neck kisses after and I was saying things into her ear that got her really turned on. She then started digging her nails into my back and pushing her lower body into mines. This all happened while cars were passing but I didn't care we were making out in public at this point in my life. After the kiss we held each other saying nothing, it was so peaceful, she then opened up how she has an aneurism in her heart and it can burst anytime and that's how her mother passed. I felt so bad for her and kept on consoling her with caressing her. I then went home a new man after the kiss as I didn't think it finally actually happened at 30. We texted after and talked about the night and how I enjoyed the kiss and she did for someone with no experience like myself in that. Even the next day I couldn't believe it happened.
Over time we texted and at times she was flipping a switch with her personality. I wasn't sure what to do as she a very ill person and at times didn’t want to talk and still wanted to and said I have communication issues. She was going into surgery the final week I met her for ice cream. She was very scared of going into a life-threatening surgery and I could see it that night. She wasn't mean to me in person that night and we talked for a few hours into the night in the parking lot. I didn't know much what to say to her since she wanted to say goodbye the next day before she left for NY for surgery. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye as we didn't meet the following day. I didn't get to kiss her again that night either as she said she doesn't like PDA when there are people around as there was to people in their car right near us. So we hugged goodbye.
The reason I didn't meet to say a final goodbye before surgery was that she was busy preparing to go and I didn't text her till later in that day and again she was super upset and saying she wasn't going to talk with me and yet she still did. I wished her the best of luck and sent good thoughts as she left. In between then and her coming back I never seen her since last October. Her surgery didn't succeed sadly and she's pretty much disabled now and needs to revise it if possible. I still text with her till this day more of a pen pal. I never asked her if it ended but I was ready to move on as I shouldn't have to have one choice of a person to date and the way things played out. I needed more experiences dating and that's where I am now. But I am grateful she gave me my first dates ever and my first and only kiss, it was more than a peck being a makeout.
All I know are dating apps and I even got photos done for them by a photographer who dating photography. It's the same pics I used when that only woman I dated messaged me. But since then I have not had any success or interest from anyone else. I barely get matches if I am lucky. And I'm on all apps and have subscriptions to Match, Tinder and OkCupid. I try to reach out on the apps that allow to message first and even then I barely get a match after so many sent out. I waste more time and get little to no results. Only one woman back in February agreed to meet for coffee and she wasn't interested after the date. It was a short date too and I'm assuming she wasn't as interested in person versus how she seemed on the app of Facebook dating. So since then, it's been pretty frustrating with the no results.
I've gotten putting so much time and money into it. Only to get nothing much of it. I have a snapshot of my photos I use and bio now off Tinder and I just use the same for all the other apps. Some on here have trashed me for getting a photographer and saying the photos aren't genuine. But I put my trust in the photographer as he is the professional. Others have criticized my appearance and nerdy type. So I'm not sure what else to do as it's mixed responses on my profile as some also say all is good yet I don't have results.
So know I don't know what to do next as with the virus we can't exactly meet people and that was something I wanted to work on this year to go to events to meet people that way. I've done geek speed dating way back in 2018 only to get a blank piece of paper. I tried going to a cosplay meet up at a bar and arcade here and nothing much occurred from them last year. Anything like that isn't happening anytime soon so I only have dating apps or maybe there are ways I still can get something rolling in person? So I am asking for advice or any help to get something that I truly desire a relationship. It hurts at times as so many people have had many at my age and I'm only looking for one to get those experiences in life. My brother and a cousin as examples are just generally terrible and have been abusive to their partners and are wreckless in general and have had many partners. And I don't know how to even be that way and I feel hopeless that I will never experience love as I age older. I was always the outsider growing up and still am. Do I get photos redone by another photographer? Do I try to hire a relationship or dating coach to help? I don't want to give up but it's very depressing that I can't seem to figure out what's wrong and why I can't achieve this. I greatly appreciate any help and thank you very much if you read all this. Thank you.
tl;dr: I'm a 31-year-old man who's never had any relationship in my entire life and I recently turned 31 this September. I only dated one woman shortly off a dating app last year and had my first and only kiss. I am grateful for that experience but really want a relationship with me getting older. And it hurts at times knowing this and unless you were in my position you would know how it feels. I don't know what to do now I am still stuck and can't seem to get any interest off dating apps despite taking photos by a dating photographer. Message me if you want a snapshot of my profile.

I just added this to a remark that I wrote hours ago. I usually comment rather than make a post, but while I was doing that I realized that people here might find it interesting enough for it's own post.
Some more from the book...
The list doesn't contain any symptoms of motor hyperactivity. Motor hyperactivity symptoms were worse (than inattentive symptoms) at distinguishing those with ADHD from those with other clinical conditions.
Also the book states:
In creating this list, they started by:
In the list above, number 8 and 9 were taken from the DSM, the remaining were from executive functioning-related Clinical Interviews.
A modified version of Table 7.1 "EF Items from Clinical Interview" has been posted a few times here. Mainly from the list from Taking Charge of Adult ADHD. The one I remember most recently being this post about people saying "Everyone has ADHD."

2020.09.09 02:37 GreyBuildings679 I’ve been hired to find a lost satanical painting. Unexplainable things have started happening since I began my search. Part 2.

part 1
part 3
I meet Chelsea outside Winthrop Assets the next day. Her face sun-kissed, once curly hair has been blown out and pinned back.
“Did you tell Kelly I was looking for Sarah Adams’ paintings?” I ask as we make our way into the lobby, before swiftly going up to the top floor.
“Was it a secret?” Chelsea bites her lip. “Sorry, Kelly asked why we wanted to visit, and I just figured there was no reason not to tell her.”
“Don’t worry about it.” I give Chelsea a smile, which eases the lines indented in between her eyebrows. I wonder if it was Kelly who followed me home last night and is responsible for the apples. In a way, I hope she is, not knowing is far worse.
Kelly meets us outside the elevator in a tailored Dior suit. Her look has matured since we last met with the addition of glasses that sit atop the bridge of her sculpted nose, and subtle gold jewelry that I’m sure is worth the GDP for some countries.
She gives us air kisses, reiterating how pleased she is to see us. A twinkle comes from her left hand, which she waves across her face. Chelsea catches it.
“Oh my god. Did you get engaged? Look at this rock! I’m not one to swear, but holy shit!” Chelsea grabs Kelly’s hand, looking at the massive diamond.
“Soon to be Mrs. Miles Winthrop.” Kelly’s lips curl upwards.
“Well done, you,” Chelsea exclaims, holding her hand like it is some precious artifact.
Leading us down a hallway, Kelly takes us to a door, putting her hand on the center, and lowering her glasses, as a machine scans her iris. A green light appears and the door opens with a poof. We follow behind, walking into a secure room, paintings line the walls.
“I present the Winthrop Collection, the world’s largest acquisition of artwork pertaining to the occult and the devil. A common passion, almost obsession, that me and my fiancé share.” Kelly takes a step back, watching our reactions.
I am admittedly impressed. There are several paintings by Bosch and Blake, as well as a famous engraving by Musi that I have only seen in textbooks. There other things here too, sacred things, masks and rock paintings depicting a large black figure, dating back god knows how far. A worn scroll in Hebrew adorns the wall, with the image of a snake. I could spend an eternity here, but I know what I am looking for and instantly walk over.
Side by side, are the three known paintings by Sarah Adams. The first is of a man in a forest surrounded by animals. The second a small boy, walking along a path, beside him are eggs, with small chicks scurrying about. The last, of a community, a group of people praying under a large cross. My eyes scan them, securing Sarah’s signature in each, the small snake.
“The paintings represent the father, the son, and the holy spirit. At first glance, the work could be seen as a tribute of the artist’s devotion to God and her faith.” Kelly steps next to me. “But upon closer look.”
“A black dog is in every painting.” Chelsea says in a whisper, “The Devil’s familiar.”
“And if you look at the faces of the boy and the father, a blue mark, a witch’s mark. So subtle, you could almost miss it.” Kelly grins. “If you study the people in the third piece, you can see an unholy teat somewhere on their bodies. This woman has one in between her fingers. Witches were thought to have an extra one to suckle spirits.”
“Phenomenal.” Chelsea echo’s what I’m thinking.
“Do you mind if I take pictures?” I turn to Kelly who gives me a small nod.
“Thank you.” I put my phone in my pocket when I’m done. “And thank you for showing us the collection. We should go, I don’t want to take up any more of your time.”
As we are walking out of the room Kelly meets my pace. “I hear that you’re working for Arlene Van Colt trying to find the lost works of Sarah Adams.” She scoffs, “Arlene is a true dilettante, a neophyte in matters of the occult. I swear, some people get an Ouija board and think they're Satanists. Pathetic.”
“Regardless, she’s managed to find one of the paintings already.” I turn, watching with both glee and trepidation, as the expression changes on Kelly’s face. She didn’t know that part.
“How?” Kelly stands upright, glaring. “How did she find it?”
“She had a dealer who apparently dug it up somewhere.” I shrug.
“Whatever she’s offering you we’ll double it.” Kelly grabs me by the shoulders, her apathetic demeanor crumbling. I see a look of desperation on her face.
“You can’t double what has no amount.” I slide away, releasing myself from Kelly’s talons. Truth is I would rather jam an icepick in my eye than work for Kelly or her soon to be decrepit husband.
Taking a step back and regaining her composure, Kelly pulls at her suit. “Thank you for coming, ladies.” She turns before looking over her shoulder. “Be careful Lucy. Happy hunting.”

When I arrive back at my apartment later that day, coming up the stairs I stop in my tracks. In front of my door is a black dog, is it the same one that I saw yesterday by the subway?
I’m holding a sandwich in my hand, and break it in half, throwing it towards the animal who sniffs the food before swallowing it in one bite.
She comes over brushing my leg and nuzzling her snout against me. I notice she has no collar, and against my better judgment, I let her inside. If my landlord Raani finds out, she’ll have my head. The dog jumps right on my bed, going in a circle before finally laying down.
“You better not have fleas.” I fill up a bowl of water, placing it on the ground, just in case she’s thirsty. “What should we call you anyway? Raven? Seems fitting because of your coat.” The dog, looks at me, tilting her head. “Ok. Raven it is.”
I turn on the television, Frasier again, “Go ahead, Raven. I’m listening.” I say Frasier’s catchphrase to my unamused audience.
As it gets dark out, Raven goes to the door, pawing at it. I open it, and she bounds outside disappearing into the night. I’m not sure if I should chase after her, but something tells me not to, she knows the way back.
After a thankless dinner of rice and raita, I go to the couch, propping up my legs, and examining the photocopy of the Sarah Adams painting that Arlene has, or as I have started calling it woman bangs devil.
I notice something interesting along one side of the border, the paint strokes are different, heavier and thicker, as if they were meant to form something else like it’s half-finished. I keep looking till my eyes become heavy, closing.
I can hear the TV, “Hey baby, I hear the blues a-calling tossed salads and scrambled eggs.”

Waking up with a jolt, I blink, the room is completely dark, the TV off. I realize I must have fallen asleep. Sitting up, I see a shift of light in the hallway towards my bedroom. It’s a shadow, a shapeless form, moving and twitching as if it were mechanical. Fear blossoms in my chest, sucking in my breath with a sharp inhale, the outline freezes. Then, whatever it is, seems to vibrate, moving faster and more rapidly, like a spinning tire, before propelling forward and merging with the blackness completely.
Glued to the couch, I can hear something traversing around the room, going at a furious speed. There is a loud bang, which erupts in the recesses in my apartment, and from somewhere an object falls over in the kitchen ricocheting against the tile. There is a burst of laughter, or is it crying, that sounds like it’s coming from underneath me.
From where I am, the rest of my home is obscured, as if a black curtain, has been brought down. I hold my breath, as I see two long black hands appear from that dark space, stretching across the carpet, lengthening as they make their way closer. Mangled claws, hold something, stopping before me, dropping it a few inches from my feet. It’s the print out I was looking at before, written across in red ink, two words, fode abyssi.
The hands present it like a gift, before recoiling.
Stillness fills the space, the darkness abates, and I realize with relief that I am once again alone. Petrified, I get up, I feel like screaming, but my attention is diverted. I hear a sound, but this time coming from outside, voices talking. My door handle shakes violently. Someone is trying to get inside.
With giant strides I move to the kitchen, grabbing a large kitchen knife, and holding it straight ahead. My breath is staggard, as I try to steady myself, preparing for whatever inevitably come through the door.
There is a dog barking, and the shaking and voices cease.
After a few minutes I go to the window, and with relief see nobody is there.
Dropping the knife, it clanks against the flooring. I’ve been holding it so tight the outline of the handle remains indented in the palm of my hand. With a switch, my apartment becomes illuminated, and my heartbeat finally begins to feel like it’s not going to explode out of my chest.
Unable to stand, I collapse onto the floor, picking up the paper that’s been left, “Fode abyssi.”
What the hell did I get myself into?
———————————————————
I’ve been meaning to make a trip to Beadle and Bob, the employer of Jeffery Cameron the man who found Arlene’s painting. Exhausted from last night, I reluctantly make my way uptown towards Harlem, pounding 5-hour energy drinks, a mistake as I’m still tired but now with heart palpitations.
Beadle and Bob, is an ill-fitting shop on a deserted, grimy street, down the corner from a 7-Eleven. It looks terribly out of place, rightfully belonging tucked away in some mysterious corner in Barcelona or Paris. The sign out front is black, with liquid gold writing, sleek and stunning. I enter to find an older woman behind the counter, frumpy with wild white locks that hang down past her waist.
“Hello. I’m here to meet Jeffery Cameron.” I sling my backpack across my shoulder, examining the interior, which is constructed of deep rich mahogany wood.
“Jeffery has been missing for about a week.” The woman smiles a toothless grin, speaking in a distinctively Jamaican accent. “Skipped town, or maybe something worse. He’s the type to up and vanishes though. Never liked da men
“Damn.” I let out a sigh, “Did he mention anything to you about a painting he found? A work by Sarah Adams?”
“It’s funny, you’re the second person to inquire about this painting. A woman came here yesterday wanting to know the same thing.” The older woman seems amused by this. I, on the other hand, am not.
“Black hair, no tits?” I say, knowing already that it’s Kelly Armstrong.
“That sounds about right.” The woman nods, “Jeffery procured a painting for a client recently, all of his notes are on his desk, you’re welcome to look. More than likely going to throw it away, don’t suspect he’ll be coming for them anytime soon.”
She points me in the direction of a desk, littered with papers. I sit down, rummaging through till I find a print out of the three paintings I saw at the Winthrop Collection. Underneath is written:
Father > Mother
Son > Daughter
Holy Spirit > Devil?
Something clicks inside my head, the lost work of Sarah Adams is an inversion of her original three pieces, the paintings I had seen as part of the Winthrop collection.
The painting of the man, representing the father, is the opposite of the one Arlene secured, the mother, the woman. Which means that the other two lost works would be of a similar relation. For the painting of the son, there is a lost painting of the daughter. For the holy spirit, the unholy spirit.
I silently thank Jeffery Cameron, wherever that poor bastard is, and continue looking through the contents of the desk. I find a folded map and unfurl it. I’m not surprised when I read the title Salem, Massachusetts. Of course.
“Did you find what you were looking for?” I hear a voice, and turn to see the woman from out front, leaning up against the doorframe.
“I did. Thanks. Do you mind me asking, did Jeffery talk to you at all about what he was looking for?”
The woman, bobs her sizeable head up and down, “Something like that.”
“Did he ever mention anything strange happening to him? Seeing things that weren’t there, or shouldn’t be?” Those horrible claw-like black hands from last night flash in my mind. Part of me feels I might be losing my grip on reality, the other part of me realizes that maybe there’s something more nefarious at play.
The woman narrows her eyes, “You ever hear the story of Pandora’s box? How that woman just wanted to take a little peek inside, curious and all that, and out comes all this horrible stuff. Sometimes you get more than you bargain for when you start looking for things.”
I take in her words, pausing, “Thank you again.” I get up and go towards the door.
“You just going to keep on looking in that box, aren’t you?” The woman crosses her arms in front of her chest, there’s a laughter to her words.
“I have to.” I smile, “Just like Eve biting the apple. Just like Pandora opening the box. I have to know.” I wave goodbye.
“Bye Lucy.” I hear her say, as I leave.
As I walk away from Beadle and Bob the words I just said settle with me, like tea leaves at the bottom of a mug, compounding my resolution. I am cognizant something unexplainable is happening. I don’t believe in the supernatural, but after last night, how can I deny it?
Regardless, I feel compelled to keep moving forward, to find out what happened to the lost work of Sarah Adams. I don’t think I could turn back at this point even if I wanted.
At that moment my phone rings. It’s Chelsea. “Hey Lucy, how’s the search going?”
“Good.” I take out the map, I lifted from Jeffery’s desk. “I’m going to Salem. Want to come?”

2020.09.07 12:46 Nate_Draws Building a PC for Art, Animation, Game Design, Gaming, and Streaming. [USD $1000 budget]

I am a newbie to building PC's. I've been using an MSI gaming laptop to do both my work and play games. It has been running out of storage because of the art files and games I've accumulated over the few years I had it. Since I'm out of college, work remotely, and less likely to move around to carry a laptop to places, I want to build a PC that works better than my gaming laptop in the long run, and for more stationary things.
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Primarily art/animation, gaming, and streaming. I switch back and forth between a Wacam Intuos Pro and a Cintiq for my tablets. I want to use large dual monitors to be able to have a larger art canvas space to work with, while I can use my other screen to put my references on (also to view my friends when they webcam/stream over discord because it's frustrating trying to switch back and forth between working on art and viewing them on one screen. Breaks workflow).
I use Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Animate, InDesign, etc.), Toon Boom Harmony, Clip Studio Paint, PaintTool SAI, Maya, and Blender for my art/animation/3D modeling/video editing stuff. They take up a lot of RAM. I also work with Unity to import 3D models into it to work with game design.
I play games like Final Fantasy XIV, Warframe, Overwatch, Stellaris, modded Skyrim, Arma 3, Monster Hunter: World, Sims 4, Sims 3, NieR: Automata, Destiny 2, Stardew Valley, modded XCOM 2, and other games I play less often.
I stream on Twitch using StreamLabs OBS. I don't use a webcam because I like my appearance to be anonymous to the public.
I want this to be a PC that can have parts be replaced with new parts over time so I can save money that way instead of having to build another PC from the ground up.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
My maximum budget is USD $1,000. I can push a little up to $20 more, but that's it.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Likely within a month or two to build up money.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
I'm not sure since this is the first PC I'm building. I do want large dual screens to help with my workflow. Lots of RAM for my animation and art programs, and my games. Big hard drive for both the creative stuff and games.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
I live in Massachusetts in the United States. I live close to a Microcenter location.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I'll reuse my USB Logitech M325 mouse that I use for my laptop to save money until I get a chance to get a better mouse. I still want mouse suggestions not included with the budget for when I buy a mouse later down the line. I'm using my USB Sades A60S headphones and mic that's still in good condition.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I looked up overclocking, but I don't know if I'd do it or not? Seems like the benefits are faster speed and pay less cash, but a shorter PC lifespan. I want to preserve my PC's life as much as possible while being able to work at my best workflow/enjoyable gaming. Would like advice on overclocking for my circumstances.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
A good graphics card, large amount of storage, lots of RAM/GB/memory, fans to work with the big programs I have, and dual monitors. I'm not sure what else I would need for my build.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
I currently use WiFi with a modem. I may use both ethernet and WiFi (not at the same time) some point in the future when I move to another place within the year.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
My favorite colors are light blue and red, and I like LED lighting on my keyboard that I can change the color of and make dimmebrighter. My least favorite colors are brown, purple, and pink. (These are just cosmetics and not necessary since I'm on a budget. So if I were to go with another color like black, it wouldn't really affect me).
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Nope, I already have a copy of Windows 10.
Extra info or particulars:
I want a long-lasting PC that I'd be less likely to have to repair, and parts that can easily be replaced and upgraded in the future if need be. I'd also want to see an optimal build that's far beyond my budget just for curiosity's sake to compare with what I can afford.

2020.09.07 05:11 official_prabhu $800 - $1000 build for gaming, Excel, and light video editing

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
I'll be using it daily for gaming (GTA V, RDR2, Warzone, Football Manager, FIFA, Need for Speed games etc.), a lot of Microsoft Excel work, some video recording/editing (nothing too crazy though)
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$800 - $1000, ideally closer to $800 than $1000 but if it's really worth it, I'd be down to spend 1k
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Depending on the prices of the build either ASAP or around thanksgiving to wait for any deals
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc).
Only the tower and OS (Windows 10 Home)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Massachusetts, USA. I have a Microcenter nearby
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Reusing my 1080p 60Hz monitor (will save up to buy a 1440p 144Hz next year so a build that can run 1440p at that framerate with reasonably good settings would be great, if possible), speakers, keyboard, mouse (I only need the tower and the OS)
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I'd like to overclock the CPU down the line but it isn't a priority so if it's cheaper for a CPU without overclock support I'd rather have that to stay in budget
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Wifi Support is a must as I won't have Ethernet access most of the year in a college dorm. A 1 TB SSD would be great as well. RGBs in the build are a plus but I can always just buy some strips for that if it can't fit the budget.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I’d like the case to be black and a mid-tower. RGBs would be nice but not a must.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes, Windows 10 Home

2020.08.31 21:36 EmpressTeemo Rioter AMA - 30th August 2020 - Summary

SenseiChroma: Do you sometimes go around Reddit or other media platforms to create new ideas for a card?
DanCast(DC): We go around LoR player communities on Reddit and elsewhere quite often, not for new card ideas specifically, but to understand what players are liking and not liking about the game. Better understanding people's impressions and desires factor into what we make in the future more broadly.
IDKhow2Discord: Thanks so much for doing this AMA, super big fan of the Runeterra universe, been playing League of Legends for 7+ years, LoR since closed beta and super excited to finally try and participate in a Riot AMA! What was the process like play testing for the balance of this segment of the Targon release year, specifically the new region of Targon itself? Was Targon created holistically then segmented, or has development and balancing always been aware and aiming for the current style of a segmented release for the region? As the only other region expansion we’ve seen so far, Bilgewater seems like it could have been wildly different in terms of both thematic resonance and balance if it and the other original 6 regions new champions added in Rising Tides had been separated into segments. And if Targon was originally created holistically do you think the segmented release will make balancing harder going forward, as some card synergies or natural archetype counters have already been developed, but not yet released?
Dovagedys(D): Thanks for the question(s), It's a complicated question with a complicated answer. Ultimately, we know we want to be able to provide new cards to everyone at a satisfying cadence. Originally, we had planned to release new cards every 4 months, but over the past 6 months we quickly realized that is not fast enough. We wanted to move to a two month cadence, but most of the work for Targon and the region that comes after Targon had already been done. We definitely did extensive play testing and balance work on each segment. We believe that all three releases bring new things to the game and are fun to play.
Intrif: Your favourite Colour?
D: Purple. Bearly Leah(BL): Getting in on the easy answer here, blue or purple!
TheSkilledRoy (TSR): I am a huge fan of designing custom cards in just about all the card games I play, and some card games are very transparent with their design philosophies. While I understand LoR is a much newer game than some of those games and thus might have less nailed down in the way of philosophy; we saw relatively recently some of the design process outlined in your "From Champ Select to Your Deck" Article. For those of us who either wish to design custom content, or for those who might one day wish to apply to work for LoR as a designer, would it be possible to get many more articles in the same vein as that one? I feel as though many of the designing/custom group would love to hear what goes into the game and what considerations/values you have for each Region.
Careless Whisper(CW): Great question, and I'm glad to hear the previous articles were helpful. More articles on design and our design process is definitely on the list of to do. Knowing what things y'all are interested in learning more about helps us a ton!
Tail Lover: When can I expect the other league champs with tails to be added to this game? I know you likely can't answer this but I can dream.
DC: What about a champion that sometimes has a tail?
TSR: LoR's coding and way of handling various effects such as card positioning and sequencing is really fascinating. However I'm curious just how much is easily able to be modified/used for card design. For ex; Hypothetically speaking is it possible to reference the opponent's username in a levelup animation? For example with a champion say Pyke and The List?
DC: The tech team tells me it's harder than you'd think. We had a cosmetic concept where we wanted to put your game name on the cosmetic but we decided it wasn't going to be viable.
Maple: Hi Rioters! Thanks for helping us. Following the balance patches this summer, and the release of COTM are y’all considering reexamining the presence of Aggro/Combo in the game? So far it seems that these new tools empower midrange and value strategy to a great degree, but don't seem to have any new threats to keep them in check. Thanks!
D: Great question, Maple The release of Targon is still very young. I think there are still a lot of evolutions and learnings to come as people explore and the meta evolves. We are constantly evaluating the meta and working hard to ensure a healthy and diverse play experience. We want players to be able to play all kinds of decks and be able to have fun and find success. If we notice certain decks over performing we will continue our efforts to tone down cards that are overbearing and pushing other options out of the meta, as well as buffing cards that can encourage more decks that are under represented.
IDKhow2Discord: Any chance of getting long term profile stats like matches played, lifetime number of 7-win Expeditions trials, the ratio of achieving 7-wins per expedition attempts etc., so I can finally prove to my friends I’m the Expedition king of LoR? Any fun stats in general or fun personal stats you keep track of behind the scenes on individual profiles you could one day share? (Numbers of Poro’s summoned?)
DC: Yes, we believe a player profile that contains some type of match history plus a record of feel-good stats/achievements like this is a great feature and something that provides a social foundation for seeing what other players are up to - what they pursue and accomplish. It's something we will be working on.
ASDASDS: What is your least favorite card and why is it so?
BL: I have a hard time playing around Ledros. It's silly but I always forget about him and then die to him! D:
Domi: Hey guys, thanks for this AMA. About Taric's ability: Why did you "nerf" his interaction with Playful Trickster day 1?
D: Thanks for the question! We knew about the Taric + Playful Trickster combo and originally intended to have it go live with Call of the Mountain. However, after some discussion among game design, play test team, and game play leadership we decided that the opponent's experience was potentially too unfun. We want to ensure that both players are having fun in our game. Losing isn't very fun, but unavoidable in a 1v1 game. However, losing slowly and being stuck in a trapped game is very unfun and avoidable. We want games that have a clear winner to end very quickly and the Taric + Playful Trickster combo had high potential to lead to games where 1 player had no mana and no actions to take, but would be forced to click OK repeatedly while Taric slowly attacked them to death. That sounds like a terrible experience and we wanted to protect players from being forced into situations like it.
EmpressTeemo (ET): I've read that LoR was planned to be available on multiple platforms (mostly mobile) very early on in the development. Was there any particular difficulty in porting the code over to mobile clients, or did you simultaneously code all the different builds at the same time?
BL: We built the code from the beginning to prepare for mobile - so that helped us a lot being aware of budgeting needs, especially on low end devices. Certain things, like trying to constrain ourselves to memory budgets per asset (such as texture), and running memory tests per build help us know if we're exceeding our mobile limits. This has been pretty beneficial over making it for PC then going to mobile, as we had less fixing to do for mobile launch.
TaGL: How do you decide which champions to add to each expansion? Is it more based on popularity, or how much they could bring to the game?
CW: Huge caveat that this will usually vary from expansion to expansion. Generally the process is we look at which champions best represent the region and can show off exciting mechanics or themes. Then we look at a swath of things like champ popularity, cool lore moments we want to expand on between champions, overall tone of the set, etc.
ASDASDS: Do you have a clear vision on what you would do once you will run out of regions to add?
D: Hi ASDASDS ! Yes. We have a clear plan for content that comes after our last 2 regions are introduced to the game. Unfortunately, we can't discuss future content right now, but in some cases we work on content up to 2 years before it's released.
TSR: League of Legends is well known for it's incredibly diverse range of Alternate Universes and Skins. Just recently we had a Spirit Blossom event synchronized with the LoL event at the same time. Judging from the new render of SBYasuo, alot of us were expecting some sort of premium version of Yasuo such as a skin for the card. Seeing as that obviously didn't happen, what is the team's stance on skins for cards? Perhaps with new VO/FX/Levelup Animations?
DC: We have loved bringing some of the alternate fantasies to LoR through our current cosmetic products. Card cosmetics will be in LoR's future, but we're taking our time to put our best foot forward on it, including some player studies. We have to think a lot about would players rather SB Yasuo be a skin or SB Yasuo be a new card with it's own flavor and abilities? Are there some fantasies we should do as cosmetics and others we should do new cards - can we do it both ways and have it be clear to players? That's what we think about. Let us know your thoughts on the boards!
CuriousThing: Hi all! Bit of a technical curiosity: in open beta, there was a bug that allowed a player to cast Spinning Axe discarding a card that was "about" to be discarded by another effect. What was the source of this bug? Was the game engine tied to the UI somehow?
BL: That's a fun one! Disclosure: I didn't work on this bug, and I don't work on gameplay itself. But from speculation my guess would be that while the card was marked for delete, there was a time in cleanup while the animation was playing that it was still clickable, and was not marked as discarded until the animation ended. So not as much to do with UI as a timing issue.
Splingo: The video containing the roadmap for future content (e.g. the addition of Labs, Gauntlet, the Event) was super awesome. Is there another one like that planned? When should we expect it?
DC: Yes there's one being planned now. Don't expect it too soon, but we want some way to talk about the end of the year with all of you. I hope the video works out
ET: Are there any super crazy mechanics or cards you wanted to implement into the game but scratched in the end? I'm thinking of stuff like the chicken that deals 1 damage when you hover it in Hearthstone, things that are just simply bizarre :D
D: There are a ton of designs that the team tries that don't make it to be released. Sometimes they aren't fun, sometimes we can't balance them, or sometimes they don't fit well with the rest of the release. In general, we try not to discuss these ideas publicly too often, because we may decide to use them in a future release and we don't want to spoil the surprise.
Ryu: This question is completely unrelated to this game, so I’m not sure if you guys can even answer this. I’ll be finishing my 4th year of college studying cyber security this spring. I’m still trying to figure out what sort of work I’d even want to do, but I’m just curious if you guys know of any opportunities at Riot Games? Or if there’s someone I could contact regarding this? I checked the site and don’t see any opening for security jobs currently, but did see you have a bug bounty program.
BL: We do have teams that work in security. So it's something available, even if the position isn't open now. I would definitely work on putting together something demonstrable of your skill, portfolio/Github/etc, so when the time comes you'd be ready!
Splingo: How does the team view the Spirit Blossom event? Was it a success? What were the major learnings from it, and do more events in the future seem likely?
DC: We do view it as a success - and our post-event player surveys showed you all liked it too! The main thing we want to improve from the learnings is the Quest/Win of the Day system. We want to emphasize the win of the day less, and instead have more progress come from having a more distributed cadence of quests throughout the event (not all up front). As well as have the quests be less specific (I know how you feel about challenge 100 units) On the rewards: we saw players want less shards on the event road, and some new more interesting rewards instead, so we're going to work on that.
Lhunatyk: The art and lore of LoR have been amazing! How do you choose which statline/effect goes with each art/flavor?
CW: Great question! During development design works closely with narrative and art to create the art with the statline and effects of the card. So it's less of "choosing" and more creating them together as one complete coherent piece. This will often mean chatting about the theme of the character, what is important about their stat line or effect, and how to best represent those mechanics in the art.
TSR: I do love a lot of the cosmetics currently available in the game (Guardians, Cardbacks and Boards) Can I hear some more about future upcoming cosmetics that aren't in those categories and more ways to sink my bank account?
DC: But you don't love emotes?? Why can't I Jinx OMG react in this Discord?
ImpulseNE: There seems to be many cards that seem like they are supposed to be attached to currently unreleased champions. Is there a reason for releasing these cards and will you be doing any else like this in the future?
D: Great question! Cards connections in LoR are a complex network of interactions. There are many cards that are designed for specific champions, but can end up working in past, present, and future decks. We try to release cards together that we think will be the most fun and create the most interesting interactions. And we think it's fun to allude to what could be potentially coming in the future. Yes we will continue to do so in the future.
Ace: How happy were you with the meta before the expansion hit, were you satisfied with the variety of decks played?
D: Hi, thanks for the question. I am extremely proud of LoR's meta since the launch of our game. Before we launched we had a goal of having a metagame that had 10 decks. And we knew that was a lofty goal. However, since the launch of LoR we have repeatedly seen metagames that have 20, 25, 30, and up to 35 different decks that are competitively viable. I am completely blown away by the metagame diversity in LoR's meta game and excited to see it continue to evolve over time.
Simple Enigma: Just like almost everyone else I love the emotes! So much personality in them and conveys really fun emotions. Especially with how rapidly new emotes are being added are there plans to allow for more emotes to be 'equipped' for a match? And of course which 8 emotes are you running now?
DC: Wait..are you hacking to run 8 emotes? Yes, I would love for everyone to have more emote access. We want this, but we want to build a lot of things, so it comes down to deciding our priorities on what delivers the most player value. There may be a time where we have to work on a related feature, so an opportunity to adjust this will come up. My ideal would be an intuitive UI that's fast to use on mobile where a player could access all their emotes. My current fav 6: Not Sure If, Wink, Cheers, Sweating, Into My Trap, and (of course) Obliteration
Domi: What was the hardest card from Targon to code? Is it some card we’ve already seen or is it one yet to come?
D: Funny question, Taric has definitely been the most complicated card to code in Call of the Mountain.
Callonetta: When you're not working on LoR things, what games do you like to play? Mostly card games or do you sink your time into games completely different than the ones you work on?
BL: I play a lot of League of Legends / Overwatch as well. I also love party games to play with friends and platformers, metroidvanias and rhythm games galore. Some of my favorite games are the Ori series, Super Mario Sunshine, Dance Dance Revolution and Beat Saber!
Callonetta: From card drawing, animations, and even gameplay itself, LoR seems unique in that “feels bad” moments don’t come up as often as other card games I’ve played. I was wondering what specific challenges you faced creating a game that felt good to play, and what you would like to do in the future to make LoR feel even better?
D: Thanks for the thoughtful question, Callonetta. We have a lot of great plans for LoR in the future. We have worked hard to build a great foundation for the game, but this is only the beginning. Ultimately, the ideas we choose to deliver to make LoR feel better will come from the community. We want to listen and learn from you all to help us choose the improvements that you all want. I think one of the most special parts about the LoR team is how dedicated everyone on the team is to listening to players and learning how to make the game better for everyone.
mcfries mcburger: What's the basis for your card design in terms of power level? Do you ever just think of a card and say "this card is too strong/weak" and how do you tune it to the level at which it feels juuuust right?
CW: Generally when it comes to the power level of a design we ask ourselves 2 questions. Is this card sensible given the rest of the cards? If not, are there numbers (cost, power, health, effect output) where this could be a sensible card? As for how we decide what sensible is, it's a lot of playtesting, feedback, and evaluating other cards that do similar things.
Callonetta: Other things that can make a game feel bad are long animations, slow draw speed, etc. I'm sure there are a ton of other things you all do to make the game feel clean and smooth to play (UI), how you can customize your own boards, guardians, etc that make it feel more like "you", along with game mechanics that feel fair. I'm happy for any answer at all! Mostly I'm impressed at how much attention to detail has been given to making the game feel really good to play as often as possible, and wondering how you work out what's working in those areas, what isn't, and what you'd like to improve.
DC: The best way to encapsulate it is the LoR team is made up of Rioters who really care deeply about the player experience and are detail oriented and very creative at their problem solving. I'm honored to work with everyone on this team.
Diogo gol: The enemy Aurelion Sol turning allied Celestials into 0 cost, was that a bug?
D: Thanks for the question Diogo gol! The interaction of Aurelion Sol level 2 reducing the cost of opponent's cards was a bug. We released a fix for that bug shortly after the release of Call of the Mountain.
nico🥀: Hi id like to say I'm a huge fan of LoR. I’m wondering what guardian you all like the most personally for me it's cosmo :3
D: Personally, my favorite guardian is Von Yipp, but it's really hard to choose because there are so many awesome guardians. And I'm excited for upcoming guardians that will become my new favorites!
ET: Hi Leah :> You mentioned you don't work on the gameplay parts of the game! As someone who has no idea of what software engineers do, would you mind describing which parts of the end product you've been working on?
BL: Absolutely thanks for the Q! I do metagame work on DanCast's team! So Events, onboarding, rewards, quests, end of game are the types of things my team touches. We work to make sure the "out of game" experience feels good to interact with too. There's also plenty of other engineering teams too! Such as those who work to keep our build pipelines running smoothly. And they're all essential to getting LoR out to players
Cowboy Toast: One of the best parts about Legends of Runeterra are the amazing animations we see with many cards, even if they aren't champions. The recent expansion especially is incredible and very beautiful with all the designs and animations. Anyways, what's your favorite pizza topping?
BL:: Pineapple and ham Pepperoni! I'm simple but it's delicious. Also I eat the crust of my pizza first.
CheezeDraco: Would you consider diversifying the rewards in gauntlets? Because the current icon rewards are granted for the first play/win and then the mode is usually ignored by most players until a new mode/format arrives.
DC: Yes, but we're working on rewards that we think will be a better fit and can be more extensible than icons. Be on the watch for one of those future Dev videos to learn more (again, not too soon)
Klonne: Could you guys already be planning/working on champions cards that are not found in League of Legends?
D: We often talk about making new champions that don't exist in League of Legends, but right now we are focused on introducing as many champions from League into LoR as we can. There are over 140 champions in League of Legends and LoR doesn't have 1/3 of them yet.
TaGL: Do you plan to give support to older archetypes like sea monsters and scouts in current(COTM) and future expansions?
CW: We do! Part of future content design is not just expansion of older regions, but also how to add to the archetypes already present.
TerraGen: Hey guys, thanks for doing this AMA! I love all the work you have done with LoR. I love everything about the game! My question is whether or not there is a plan to add in a spectate mode?
D: We are planning to release a spectate mode in the future. I don't think we have given an exact date yet.
ET: When LoR was finally released, was there a sick underground techno party with Poro DJs? How did you celebrate - if at all?
DC: LoR released under shelter in place here in LA (and in our international locations), so we ordered some desserts on DoorDash and played online games together. The poro DJs were all booked for LoR's Korean ad team
EtherealWonder: How did you join Riot, and what made you want to join Riot?
BL:: I was playing League since 2012, and that initially piqued my interest in Riot. I volunteered at a GDC (Game Development Conference) while I was in college and met a bunch of Rioters there. They were all really nice and that really made me want to join :). I graduated in 2017, and started working at another game company in Massachusetts. In 2018 Riot hit me up and after a bunch of interviews I joined!
TSR: Is 10 the final number you’ve settled on for the number of Regions?
D: We have some fun ideas for how we could potentially shift champions to regions players may not initially associate the champion. However, right now we are focused on getting as many champions from League into LoR as possible.
Callonetta: Do you have pets, and if so, what kind, and most importantly can I pet them?
BL: I have 2 dogs, Jax and Leo. Not only can you pet them, but they demand pets. This post not sponsored by dogs
TaGL: Kind of the reverse of a previously asked question - have you designed any cards or will you design any cards soon, knowing they will be champions in the future?
DC: We don't have a handshake with LoL for anything like that at the moment, but we aspire to create interesting characters for the world of Runeterra that other teams can pick up and use if they wish. We just hope players love what is put out, and maybe if there's someone the community loves, they could be seen in another game or video or comic or such
Mimir, the Felony Fellow: Are the cards like the Startled Stomper Zoe’s creation? If not, is it a creation from her friends?
D: I'm not sure if Zoe creates them or transforms them, but she is definitely involved.
ASDASDS: Are there any champions that you agreed to never release?
D: No. We hope to release every champion someday.
eslb: What's your favorite ranked reward icon? This includes color differences from the ranks.
DC: Diamond Season of Plunder Alas, I ended Plat that season (just like every season)
TSR: A large number of champions are based on their "lore" forms rather than translations of their LoL gameplay; what goes into deciding what to focus on for champions? Thresh has an ability much closer to his ingame whereas Karma is entirely about her lore rather than how she acts in gameplay.
CW: There are a number of things we tend to look at when focusing on the champion. What is their role in the set, what mechanics do we want to show off through the champion, are there any narrative/story beats we want to hit with them. Usually we try to find what version of this champion do we want to design, and then go from there.
kino: When you design a champion, do you always have a primary archetype / deck in mind or do you intend multiple different uses for it? How important is champion versatility as opposed to the cohesiveness of its archetype?
D: It varies for each champion. We want all champions to feel special. Some of them are designed with a very specific deck in mind, like Nautilus. Others are designed with multiple decks in mind, like Shen. And yet others are more general, like Twisted Fate. However, we do want every champion to have at least one deck they are best in.
Mimir, the Felony Fellow: In roughly 3 weeks I'm gonna start my enrolment in a game development degree. As someone who lives in Portugal, is there any way to work for Riot (specifically in the LoR team since that's my favorite Riot game) without moving to the US, while being an active member of the team and not just work in localization?
BL:: LoR development largely happens between our LA and Hong Kong offices. There are other offices where other development happens though. The best way is to check the careers page and see what listings are available for the office you're interested in.
ET: Milk first or cereal first?
CW: Cereal first. ARE THERE PEOPLE THAT DO MILK FIRST?
Neo! Unicorn Rabbit Knight!: If you had a truck what would you put in it?
BL:: A smaller truck, of course.
Hanles: Hi guys! First of all thank you so much for creating such an amazing game and for your continuous support and regular updates. I would like to ask , what is your current view on the success of LoR so far? Has the number of players met your initial expectations or do you feel like there is still an unused potential to lure in new players? As a relatively new player myself who loves the game to death, I feel like so far it hasn't got the attention it deserves so I'd love to know what's the perspective of you as Rioters on the matter.
D: We are extremely proud of how many players have been enjoying LoR! We believe this is only the beginning and we hope to see more and more players joining the community over time.
Jason: Will there ever be a way to listen to the music of the boards before we buy them?
DC: Someday, yes I hope so. We have a lot of things we want to build and limited resources so we have to choose our projects with a lot of consideration. Since a lot of fans and creators preview content on video sites, we focus our efforts on more gameplay experiences for players.
A Badgerbear: What are your plans when a year from now comes and there are too many cards to balance? Will we have a similar thing to Hearthstone where sets from a while ago will be unplayable in ranked?
D: We want players to always be able to play with their favorite cards. We hope that our model for live balance will help players enjoy the cards they love. And we want to avoid situations where players aren't able to include the cards they love in their decks.
EtherealWonder: What's the funniest moment of friendly competition/dare/general tomfoolery you've seen your colleagues in Riot do for fun during break-time?
DC: Dovagedys still owes his team a rendition of a Taylor Swift song
Dovagedys: Yikes DanCast
BL: We play a lot of games together on breaks and such. I had a friend try to meme me in a game of LoR by vile-feasting my unit that he was going to kill anyways. Unfortunately that unit was Scarmother Vrynna and the extra damage won me the game he would've won. I still tease him about it.
Splingo: At one point someone from the team said that they would look into more options for making the data about viable decks that you all see open to the public. Any updates on that? It's cool to know that there are regularly 20-30 viable competitive decks, but it's hard to see past the data that fansites offer so we the players only have ever a limited amount of insight into what's actually working for people.
D: We do still plan on sharing more information around the meta, but we don't have an exact date yet.
TSR: What was the biggest emergent gameplay from the community that the team didn't foresee?
DC: There was too strong of an emote to include in the starting 6
Tail Lover: Lore question: In League, the only Yordle that has a tail is Gnar, and that makes sense due to him being ancient. But in LoR, we have Fae Bladetwirler, a Yordle that doesn't just have one tail, but multiple tails. Are tails on yordles a somewhat common thing nowadays or is it some rare special thing. Also are there any other tailed Yordles I should be aware of in the game already?
D: Keep in mind that League only showcases the champions in Runeterra. Gnar is the only yordle champion with a tail, but there are so many yordles that exist in the world of Runeterra that are not champions and many of them have tails.
Mimir, the Felony Fellow: Could we possibly have some place in the deckbuilder where we could see the card art and flavor text for everything else we can't maindeck? I wanna look at many celestial cards for description or lore reasons and I am never able to.
D: As of Call of the Mountain there is a new filter option in the deck builder that will allow you to see the Celestial cards.
mcfries mcburger: Though LoR has a slowly but surely growing competitive scene (e.g. DoR and serverwide tournaments), are there any plans to eventually have our counterpart to League's Worlds with splits and invitationals and everything?
D: We hope to have esports some day, but right now we have been very focused on making the game as fun as possible. We are focused on listening and learning to the community to be sure we are making the right improvements. We do hope to have in client tournaments and then eventually esports some day, but right now we don't have a specific date for them.
Garnetino: Seeing as there are only so many regions from Map of Runeterra not implemented in game (with 2 new regions a year), what would you do when there are no regions to implement?
D: Right now, our plan is to focus on 10 regions in runeterra. As of Call of the Mountain we have 8.
chrm14: I would like to know how you would like to lead new players to the game, and if you are thinking of creating an official deck creation system on the LoR website, and if there will be a community deck system like on mobalytics.
DC: Thank you for the thoughtful question. It's a problem space we think about, and we know deck creation is a challenging aspect for many players. Deck Bundles were one idea to give players something new they could use early. We don't want to repeat the work of our partners at Mobalytics, but we are thinking about ways to make it easier to bring friends into LoR.
Remake: Since the new patch I've had issues with Asol’s level up. So when I have 20+ power and round ends Sol sometimes just will not level up at all, this has happened in a few of my games where i have had a board 20+ power and he would not level up, any plans to look into this bug?
BL:: I can't speak to the specifics of this bug. But as a neat tidbit about bugs in general: For all bugs they will go through some triage process, including being verified by QA for a consistent repro, heading to production where they decide how impactful the bug is, and finally through engineering where we will of course attempt to fix it. There's a bunch of steps that go in the finding and fixing bugs that makes it a fun process.
Super Lasanh: Do you have plans to bring PVE game modes? Perhaps an event where there is a boss with a gigantic life, of which the community will have to strive to defeat and win prizes.
D: Personally, I would love it if we were able to eventually add some PVE and/or story game modes to LoR. It's something we talk about and hope that we can do at some point, but right now we don't have any specific release date for a PVE mode.
SenseiChroma: If you had a poro in real life, what would you name it?
D: Snack
SenseiChroma: How did you deal with the constructive criticism that most card game fans gave to you from the start of when the game was released? CCG fans of Hearthstone or MTG had made their opinions on your game, so I wonder what your opinions are on such criticism that you've been receiving the past few months.
CW: Constructive criticism is crucial for us to grow and improve the game. We always knew that initial impressions especially from CCG fans were going to be heavily rooted in other games, and that's a totally reasonable starting point. The hope is that as they play and learn more about LoR they're able to see the strengths of what makes the game great.
DC: To add on to the question; One of the areas where LoR's first impression isn't as great is in our rewards (say for Ranked or Gauntlets). In other CCGs, competitive game modes often reward cards. In games where high rarity cards are very hard to get, those rewards look very valuable. So if you just compared rewards like icons or XP to card packs or rare cards, it looks like our rewards aren't motivating. Our philosophy on more accessible cards makes it more challenging to come up with rewards here, and it may take a new player time to see how quickly their collection can grow through the roads and vault to appreciate that difference. We're working on future things we can use as rewards to help with this.
EtherealWonder: Dovagedys I'm sorry, but I have to know the story behind you owing your team a TaySwift song.
D: Honestly, it's a troll perpetrated by some devious people on my team. Once upon a time I was a singer. I'm also a gigantic Taylor Swift fan and I frequently utilize her songs, lyrics, images, and quotes in team communications. I don't really know/remember how the joke of me "owing the team" began.
TSR: A sandbox mode would be incredibly useful to help teach new players and give new scenarios for "puzzle" challenges and the like. Is there any technical limitation that makes this mode impossible to make? Or is this entirely impossible?
BL:: There are some technical implications to this unfortunately. As far as "puzzles" such as tutorials go, I know they can take some scripting for special circumstances, which makes it a large time investment. As far as a sandbox mode goes, there's a few things: exposing the right cheats on non-internal builds, the impact of having potentially infinitely long game times, or what to do about crashes as people try to do things that wouldn't happen in a normal game. We'd also have to contemplate how we load cards into the game at random (Do we need to check against your inventory, are we unloading cards no longer in use appropriately, is this impacting your game performance, etc). So not something I would say is impossible, but would take a decent time investment.
mcfries mcburger: Which poro is your favorite?
D: Nimble Poro. She's totally awesome. Also during development Steve Rubin (Live Balance Design Lead) wrote a short song about Nimble Poro and I will never forget it.
Intrif: Love you Riot(?) <--- Definitely a question
BL:: Oh my, uhm, thank you
IDKhow2Discord: Do you think Quinn is achieving her thematic fantasy right now? Regardless of power level, do you think she feels 'cool' as a champion?
D: I think so. I love Quinn and I'm really happy with her design in LoR. Her level up is one of my favorites.
r xy: how much do you take expeditions into account when designing a card (especially assigning rarity)
CW: They are a soft consideration when it comes to initial design of a card. We usually do a larger pass with Expeditions once we know the general shape of the archetype. Rarity is part of that pass, given rarity helps influence appearance rate.
Callonetta: What's your favorite thing about the player base of LoR? Least favorite? Spill the tea!
DC: Favorite: The dedication to creating a lively, welcoming, and meaningful community space for fans of the game and helping it grow.
Second favorite: The love for Spirit Blossom Corina and recognizing her from the promo art
Least Favorite: I don't know about some of your emote meta hot takes...
CW:
Fave: Y'alls meme game is off the charts and I love it
Least: Not enough love and support for the best bot, Slotbot
D: My favorite thing is the overwhelming positivity of the LoR community. I have been playing games on the internet for a very long time and I have never seen so much positivity in a game community before. It's astounding to me. I am very humbled by and proud of the community we are all building. My least favorite aspect is the hyperbolic language the community sometimes uses when talking about the metagame, segregating decks that have 52% win rate as playable or S tier and decks that have 50% win rate as tier 2, 3, or even unplayable. I think that language and thought pattern leads to the erroneous idea that there are a small number of decks in the LoR metagame, when the reality is that there are 20-35 decks that all have win rates between 47% and 53%.
SenseiChroma: Knowing that in today's time there is a pandemic going on, how did you deal working from home into developing the game as time passes by?
BL:: The pandemic is definitely a hard thing to deal with. I feel pretty lucky myself that Riot does it's best to take care of us during this time. Since I'm at a computer all day for my job, I try to take some time after work (or sometimes during, shh) to take a walk or rest if I need to. Also making sure to stay hydrated, get plenty of rest, do some cool new hobbies, and talk with people when I'm feeling down! Gotta keep up that strong mental energy.
r xy: can we please get an article on how the spell mana system came to be? (and more design articles in general pls) (and less broad pls, the champions article only had like 2 sentences per champion)
CW: That is a great question! No immediate promises, but one thing I personally want to do more is writing design articles for y'all. Knowing what parts of design you want to hear about helps a ton.
SenseiChroma: Was there ever a specific champion that you loved to main and play as in League of Legends that you wished was in LoR?
CW: I keep trying to sneak in Twitch, but the other designers keep too many traps down
Thanks for everyone who partook, and especially a huge thank you to all the Rioters who partook in this AMA! Hope to see you all again soon c:

2020.08.31 01:22 Imhotep0 Call of the Mountain Discord event AMA: Riot responses

Hello friends! I read through all the responses from the Riot AMA on discord a few hours ago, collated and formatted them here for you all who didn't see them on discord. I cut out some of the preamble "Hey i love the game", "Thanks for the question" stuff but other than that I'm pretty sure everything is here, but I might have missed one or two so if I have, I apologise :(
4 wonderful Rioters took part: @DanCast, @Dovagedys, @Bearly Leah and @Careless Whisper. Thank you all for your time answering the questions!

Do you sometimes go around reddit or other media platforms to create new ideas for a card?

DanCast: We go around LoR player communities on reddit and elsewhere quite often, not for new card ideas specifically, but to understand what players are liking and not liking about the game. Better understanding people's impressions and desires factor into what we make in the future more broadly.

Dovagedys: It's a complicated question with a complicated answer. Ultimately, we know we want to be able to provide new cards to everyone at a satisfying cadence. Originally, we had planned to release new cards every 4 months, but over this past 6 months we quickly realized that is not fast enough. We wanted to move to a two month cadence, but most of the work for Targon and the region that comes after Targon had already been done. We definitely did extensive play testing and balance work on each segment. We believe that all three releases bring new things to the game and are fun to play.

Your favourite Colour?

Dovagedys: Purple
Leah: Purple or blue

I am a huge fan of designing custom cards in just about all the card games I play, and some card games are very transparent with their design philosophies.

Whisper: Great question, and I'm glad to hear the previous articles were helpful. More articles on design and our design process is definitely on the list of to do. Knowing what things y'all are interested in learning more about helps us a ton!

when can I expect the other league champs with tails to be added to this game? I know you likely can't answer this but I can dream. [This was asked by someone with the discord name @TailLover :D]

DanCast: What about a champion that sometimes has a tail?

LoR's coding and way of handling various effects such as card positioning and sequencing is really fascinating. However I'm curious just how much is easily able to be modified/used for card design. For ex; Hypothetically speaking is it possible to reference the opponent's username in a levelup animation? For example with a champion say Pyke and The List?

DanCast: The tech team tells me it's harder than you'd think. We had a cosmetic concept where we wanted to put your game name on the cosmetic but we decided it wasn't going to be viable.

Hello Rioters! Thanks for helping us. Following the balance patches this summer, and the release of COTM are yall considering rexamining the presence of Aggro/Combo in the game? So far it seems that these new tools empower midrange and value stradegy in a great degree, but dont seem to have any new threats to keep them in check. Thanks!

Dovagedys: The release of Targon is still very young. I think there are still a lot of evolutions and learnings to come as people explore and the meta evolves. We are constantly evaluating the meta and working hard to ensure a healthy and diverse play experience. We want players to be able to play all kinds of decks and be able to have fun and find success. If we notice certain decks over performing we will continue our efforts to tone down cards that are overbearing and pushing other options out of the meta, as well as, buffing cards that can encourage more decks that are under represented.

Any chance of getting long term profile stats like matches played, lifetime number of 7-win Expeditions trials, the ratio of achieving 7-wins per expedition attempts etc., so I can finally prove to my friends I’m the Expedition king of LOR? Any fun stats in general or fun personal stats you keep track of behind the scenes on individual profiles you could one day share? (Numbers of Poro’s summoned?)

DanCast: Yes, we believe a player profile that contains some type of match history plus a record of feel-good stats/achievements like this is a great feature and something that provides a social foundation for seeing what other players are up to - what they pursue and accomplish. It's something we will be working on.

What is your least favorite card and why is it so?

Leah: I have a hard time playing around Ledros. It's silly but I always forget about him and then die to him! D:

About Taric's ability: Why did you "nerf" his interaction with Playful Triclster day 1? The Rube Goldberg Judgement + Challenger + Rally + Big dude is intended or will it somehow be patched out? Is his interaction w Assembly Bot intended? (He gets +1 towards the lv up if you Assembly bot on field with non-targetted spells)

Dovagedys: We knew about the Taric + Playful Trickster combo and originally intended to have it go live with Call of the Mountain.

I've read that LoR was planned to be available on multiple platforms (mostly mobile) very early on in the development. Was there any particular difficulty in porting the code over to mobile clients, or did you simultaniously code all the different builds at the same time? Furthermore, was there a Mac client planned that was scrapped due to the "App store streaming" MacOS has planned, or was that never a consideration?

Leah: We built the code from the beginning to prepare for mobile - so that helped us a lot being aware of budgeting needs, especially on low end devices. Certain things, like trying to constrain ourselves to memory budgets per asset (such as texture), and running memory tests per build help us know if we're exceeding our mobile limits.
This is has been pretty beneficial over making it for PC then going to mobile, as we had less fixing to do for mobile launch.

How do you decide which champions to add to each expansion? Is it more based on popularity, or how much they could bring to the game?

Whisper: Huge caveat that this will usually vary from expansion to expansion. Generally the process is we look at which champions best represent the region and can show off exciting mechanics or themes. Then we look at a swath of things like champ popularity, cool lore moments we want to expand on between champions, overall tone of the set, etc.

Seeing as there are only so many regions from Map of Runeterra not implemented in game (with 2 new regions a year), what would you do when there are no regions to implement?

Dovagedys: Right now, our plan is to focus on 10 regions in runeterra. As of Call of the Mountain we have 8.

Do you have a clear vision on what you would do once you will run out of regions to add?

Dovagedys: Yes. We have a clear plan for content that comes after our last 2 regions are introduced to the game. Unfortunately, we can't discuss future content right now, but in some cases we work on content up to 2 years before it's released.

Some other card games have taken their main characters and placed them in different colors or classes? Is this something we could see once we have all the champions in game/we need champions in less populated regions? For example Yasuo and Ahri are currently heading to Bilgewater, would we hypothetically see a Yasuo in Ionia and A Yasuo in Bilge at the same time?

Dovagedys: We have some fun ideas for how we could potentially shift champions to regions players may not initially associate the champion. However, right now we are focused on getting as many champions from League into LOR as possible.

League of Legends is well known for it's incredibly diverse range of Alternate Universes and Skins. Just recently we had a Spirit Blossom event syncronized with the LoL event at the saem time. Judging from the new render of SBYasuo, alot of us were expecting some sort of premium version of Yasuo such as a skin for the card. Seeing as that obviously didn't happen, what is the team's stance on skins for cards? Perhaps with new VO/FX/Levelup Animations?

DanCast: We have loved bringing some of the alternate fantasies to LoR through our current cosmetic products.

Hi all! Bit of a technical curiosity: in open beta, there was a bug that allowed a player to cast Spinning Axe discarding a card that was "about" to be discarded by another effect such as shown here. What was the source of this bug? Was the game engine tied to UI somehow?

Leah: That's a fun one! Disclosure I didn't work on this bug, and I don't work on gameplay itself. But from speculation my guess would be that while the card was marked for delete, there was a time in cleanup while the animation was playing that it was still clickable, and was not marked as discarded until the animation ended. So not as much to do with UI as a timing issue.

The video containing the roadmap for future content (e.g. the addition of Labs, Gauntlet, the Event) was super awesome. Is there another one like that planned? When should we expect it?

DanCast: Yes there's one being planned now. Don't expect it too soon, but we want some way to talk about the end of the year with all of you. I hope the video works out

Are there any super crazy mechanics or cards you wanted to implement into the game but scratched in the end? I'm thinking of stuff like the chicken that deals 1 damage when you hover it in Hearthstone, things that are just simply bizarre :D

Dovagedys: There are a ton of designs that the team tries that don't make it to be released. Sometimes they aren't fun, sometimes we can't balance them, or sometimes they don't fit well with the rest of the release. In general, we try not to discuss these ideas publicly too often, because we may decide to use them in a future release and we don't want to spoil the surprise.

This question is completely unrelated to this game, so I’m not sure if you guys can even answer this.

Leah: We do have teams that work in security. So it's something available, even if the position isn't open now. I would definitely work on putting together something demonstrable of your skill, portfolio/Github/etc, so when the time comes you'd be ready!

How does the team view the Spirit Blossom event? Was it a success? What were the major learnings from it, and do more events in the future seem likely?

DanCast: We do view it as a success - and our post-event player surveys showed you all liked it too! The main we want to improve from the learnings is the Quest/Win of the Day system. We want to emphasize the win of the day less, and instead have more progress come from have a more distributed cadence of quests throughout the event (not all up front). As well has have the quests be less specific (I know how you feel about challenge 100 units) On the rewards: we saw players want less shards on the event road, and some new more interesting rewards instead, so we're going to work on that.

The art and lore of LoR have been amazing! How do you choose which statline/effect goes with each art/flavor?

Whisper: Great question! During development design works closely with narrative and art to create the art with the statline and effects of the card. So it's less of "choosing" and more creating them together as one complete coherent piece. This will often mean chatting about the theme of the character, what is important about their stat line or effect, and how to best represent those mechanics in the art.

I do love alot of the cosmetics currently available in the game (Guardians, Cardbacks and Boards) Can I hear some more about future upcoming cosmetics that aren't in those categories and more ways to sink my bank account?

DanCast: But you don't love emotes?? Why can't I Jinx OMG reaction in this slack?

There seems to be many cards that seem like they are supposed to be attachted to currently unreleased champions. Is there a reason for releaseing these cards and will you be doing any else like this in the future?

Dovagedys: Cards connections in LOR are a complex network of interactions. There are many cards that are designed for specific champions, but can end up working in past, present, and future decks. We try to release cards together that we think will be the most fun and create the most interesting interactions. And we think it's fun to allude to what could be potentially coming in the future. Yes we will continue to do so in the future.

How Happy were you with the meta before the expansion hit, were you satisfied with the variety of decks played?

Dovagedys: I am extremely proud of LOR's meta since the launch of our game.

Just like almost everyone else I love the emotes! So much personality in them and conveys really fun emotions. Especially with how rapidly new emotes are being added are there plans to allow for more emotes to be 'equipped' for a match? And of course which 8 emotes are you running now?

DanCast: Wait...are you hacking to run 8 emotes?
Yes, I would love for everyone to have more emote access. We want this, but we want to build a lot of things, so it comes down to deciding our priorities on what delivers the most player value. There may be a time where we have to work on a related feature, so an opportunity to adjust this will come up. My ideal would be an intuitive UI that's fast to use on mobile where a player could access all their emotes.
My current fav 6: Not Sure If, Wink, Cheers, Sweating, Into My Trap, and (of course) Obliteration

What was the hardest card from targon to code? Is it some card we've already seen or is it one yet to come?

Dovagedys: Taric has definitely been the most complicated card to code in Call of the Mountain.

When you're not working on LoR things, what games do you like to play? Mostly card games or do you sink your time into games completely different than the ones you work on?

Leah: I play a lot of League of Legends / Overwatch as well. I also love party games to play with friends and platformers, metroidvanias and rhythm games galore. Some of my favorite games are the Ori series, Super Mario Sunshine, Dance Dance Revolution and Beat Saber!

Some players can feel really bad when opponents are able to draw from the top of their deck (although this isn't in my opinion, an issue, but it can be considered something that inherently feels worse than your opponent drawing from the bottom of your deck). Other things that can make a game feel bad are long animations, slow draw speed, etc.

Dovagedys: We have a lot of great plans for LOR in the future.
DanCast: The best way to encapsulate it is the LoR team is made up of Rioters who really care deeply about the player experience and are detailed oriented and very creative at their problem solving. I'm honored to work everyone on this team.

What's the basis for your card design in terms of power level? Do you ever just think of a card and say "this card is too strong/weak" and how do you tune it to the level at which it feels juuuust right?

Whisper: Generally when it comes to power level of a have a design we ask ourselves 2 questions. Is this card sensible given the rest of the cards? If not, are there numbers (cost, power, health, effect output) where this could be a sensible card.
As for how we decide what sensible is, it's a lot of playtesting, feedback, and evaluating other cards that do similar things.

the enemy Aurelion Sol transform the allie celestials cards into 0 mana cost,is it a bug?

Dovagedys: The interaction of Aurelion Sol level 2 reducing cost of opponent's cards was a bug. We released a fixed for that bug shortly after the release of Call of the Mountain.

Hi id like to say im a huge fan of LoR im wondering what guardian you all like the most personally for me its cosmo :3

Dovagedys: Personally, my favorite guardian is Von Yipp, but it's really hard to choose because there are so many awesome guardians. And I'm excited for upcoming guardians that will become my new favorites

How much of my soul do I have to give you guys to get a spoiler to show during next spoiler season?

DanCast: How could your soul be used to provide players value? I mean if you're going to try to bribe a Rioter, do it with something that we can give back to the players.
(Thanks for being cool with this trolling)

Hi Leah :> You mentioned you don't work on the gameplay parts of the game! As someone who has no idea of what software engineers do, would you mind describing which parts of the endproduct you've been working on?

Leah: I do metagame work, on DanCast's team!

One of the best parts about Legends of Runeterra are the amazing animations we see with many cards, even if they aren't champions. The recent expansion especially is incredible and very beautiful with all the designs and animations. Anyways, what's your favorite pizza topping?

Leah:Pineapple and ham Pepperoni! I'm simple but it's delicious. Also I eat the crust of my pizza first.

Would you consider diversifying the rewards in gauntlets? Because the current icon rewards are granted for the first play/win and then the mode is usually ignored by most players until a new mode/format arrives.

DanCast: Yes, but we're working on rewards that we think will be a better fit and can be more extensible than icons. Be on the watch for one of those future Dev videos to learn more (again, not too soon)

Could you guys already be planning/working on champions cards that are not found in League of Legends?

Dovagedys: we often talk about making new champions that don't exist in League of Legends, but right now we are focused on introducing as many champions from League into LOR as we can. There are over 140 champions in League of Legends and LOR doesn't have 1/3 of them yet.

Do you plan to give support to older archetypes like sea monsters and scouts in current(cotm) and future expansions?

Whisper: We do! Part of future content design is not just expansion of older regions, but also how to add to the archetypes already present.

My question is whether or not there is a plan to add in a spectate mode?

Dovagedys: We are planning to release a spectate mode in the future. I don't think we have given an exact date yet.

When LoR was finally released, was there a sick underground techno party with Poro DJs? How did you celebrate - if at all?

DanCast: LoR released under shelter in place here in LA (and in our international locations), so we ordered some desserts on DoorDash and played online games together. The poro DJs were all booked for LoR's Korean ad team

How did you join Riot, and what made you want to join Riot?

Leah: I was playing League since 2012, and that initially piqued my interest in Riot.

Do you have pets, and if so, what kind, and most importantly can I pet them?

Leah: I have 2 dogs, Jax and Leo. Not only can you pet them, but they demand pets. This post not sponsored by dogs

Kind of the reverse of a previously asked question - have you designed any cards or will you design any cards soon, knowing they will be champions in the future?

DanCast: We don't have a handshake with LoL for anything like that at the moment, but we aspire to create interesting characters for the world of Runeterra that other teams can pick up and use if they wish. We just hope players love what is put out, and maybe if there's someone the community loves, they could be seen in another game or video or comic or such

I have a question: Are the cards like the Startled Stomper Zoe's creation? (if not hers, is it a creation from her friends?)

Dovagedys: I'm not sure if Zoe creates them or transforms them, but she is definitely involved.

Are there any champions that you agreed to never release?

Dovagedys: No. We hope to release every champion some day.

Whats your favorite ranked reward icon? this includes color difference from the ranks.

DanCast: Diamond Season of Plunder
Alas, I ended Plat that season (just like every season)

A large number of champions are based on their "lore" forms rather than translations of their LoL gameplay; what goes into deciding what to focus on for champions? Thresh has an ability much closer to his ingame whereas Karma is entirely about her lore rather than how she acts in gameplay.

Whisper: There are a number of things we tend to look at when focusing on the champion. What is their role in the set, what mechanics do we want to show off through the champion, are there any narrative/story beats we want to hit with them. Usually we try to find what is the version of this champion do we want to design, and then go from there.

when you design a champion, do you always have a primary archetype / deck in mind or do you intend multiple different uses for it? how important is champion versatility as opposed to the cohesiveness of its archetype?

Dovagedys: It varies for each champion. We want all champions to feel special. Some of them are designed with a very specific deck in mind, like Nautilus. Others are designed with multiple decks in mind, like Shen. And yet others are more general, like Twisted Fate. However, we do want every champion to have at least one deck they are best in.

In roughly 3 weeks I'm gonna start my enrolment in a game development degree. As someone who lives in Portugal, is there any way to work for Riot (specifically in the LoR team since that's my favorite Riot game) without moving to the US, while being an active member of the team and not just work in localization?

Leah: LoR development largely happens between our LA and Hong Kong offices. There are other offices where other development happens though. The best way is to check the careers page and see what listings are available for the office you're interested in.

Milk first or cereal first?

Whisper: Cereal first. ARE THERE PEOPLE THAT DO MILK FIRST?

If you had a truck what would you put in it ?

Leah: A smaller truck, of course.

Dovagedys: We are extremely proud of how many players have been enjoying LOR! We believe this is only the beginning and we hope to see more and more players joining the community over time.

Will there ever be a way to listen to the music of the boards before we buy them?

DanCast: Someday, yes I hope so. We have a lot of things we want to build and limited resources so we have to choose our projects with a lot of consideration. Since a lot of fans and creators preview content on video sites, we focus our efforts on more gameplay experiences for players.

What are your plans when a year from now comes and there are too many cards to balance? Will we have a similar thing to Hearthstone where sets from awhile ago will be unplayable in ranked?

Dovagedys: We want players to always be able to play with their favorite cards. We hope that our model for live balance will help players enjoy the cards they love. And we want to avoid situations where players aren't able to include the cards they love in their decks.

What's the funniest moment of friendly competition/bet/dare/general tomfoolery you've seen your colleagues in Riot do for fun during break-time?

DanCast: @Dovagedys still owes his team a rendition of a Taylor Swift song
Dovagedys: yikes @DanCast
Leah: We play a lot of games together on breaks and such. I had a friend try to meme me in a game of LoR by vile-feasting my unit that he was going to kill anyways. Unfortunately that unit was Scarmother Vrynna and the extra damage won me the game he would've won. I still tease him about it.

@Dovagedys I'm sorry, but I have to know the story behind you owing your team a TaySwift song.

Dovagedys: Honestly, it's a troll perpetrated by some devious people on my team. Once upon a time I was a singer. I'm also a gigantic Taylor Swift fan and I frequently utilize her songs, lyrics, images, and quotes in team communications. I don't really know/remember how the joke of me "owing the team" began.

At one point someone from the team said that they would look into more options for making the data about viable decks that you all see open to the public. Any updates on that? It's cool to know that there are regularly 20-30 viable competitive decks, but it's hard to see past the data that fansites offer so we the players only have ever a limited amount of insight into what's actually working for people.

Dovagedys: We do still plan on sharing more information around the meta, but we don't have an exact date yet.

What was the biggest emergent gameplay from the community that the team didnt foresee?

DanCast: Hello There was too strong of an emote to include in the starting 6

Lore question: In League, the only Yordle that has a tail is Gnar, and that makes sense due to him being ancient. But in LoR, we have Fae Bladetwirler, a Yordle that doesn't just have one tail, but multiple tails. Are tails on yordles a somewhat common thing nowadays or is it some rare special thing. Also are there any other tailed Yordles I should be aware of in the game already?

Dovagedys: Keep in mind that League only showcases the champions in Runeterra. Gnar is the only yordle champion with a tail, but there are so many yordles that exist in the world of Runeterra that are not champions and many of them have tails.

Finally, could we possibly have some place in the deckbuilder where we could see the card art and flavor text for everything else we can't maindeck? I wanna look at many celestial cards for description or lore reasons and I am never able to.

Dovagedys: As of Call of the Mountain there is a new filter option in the deck builder that will allow you to see the Celestial cards.

Though LoR has a slowly but surely growing competitive scene (e.g. DoR and serverwide tournaments), are there any plans to eventually have our counterpart to League's Worlds with splits and invitationals and everything?

Dovagedys: We hope to have esports some day, but right now we have been very focused on making the game as fun as possible. We are focused on listening and learning to the community to be sure we are making the right improvements.
We do hope to have in client tournaments and then eventually esports some day, but right now we don't have a specific date for them.

I would like to know how you would like to lead new players to the game, and if you are thinking of creating an official deck creation system on the LOR website, and if there will be a community deck system like on mobalitcks.

DanCast: Thank you for the thoughtful question. It's a problem space we think about, and we know deck creation is a challenging aspect for many players. Deck Bundles were one idea to give players something new they could use early. We don't want to repeat the work of our partners at Mobalytics, but we are thinking about ways to make it easier to bring friends into LoR.

Since the new patch i've had issue's with SOL'S level up. So when I ahve 20+ power and round ends Sol sometimes just will not level up at all, this has happned in a few of my games were i have had a board 20+ power and he would not level up, any plans to look into this bug?

Leah: I can't speak to the specifics of this bug.

Do you have plans to bring PVE game modes? Perhaps an event where there is a boss with a gigantic life, of which the community will have to strive to defeat and win prizes.

Dovagedys: Personally, I would love it if we were able to eventually add some PVE and/or story game modes to LOR. It's something we talk about and hope that we can do at some point, but right now we don't have any specific release date for a PVE mode.

If you had a poro in real life, what would you name it?

Dovagedys: Snack

How did you deal with the constructive criticism that most card game fans gave to you from the start of when the game was released? Ccg fans like hearthstone or MTG had made their opinions on your game, so I wonder what your opinions are on such criticism that you've been receiving the past few months

Whisper: Constructive criticism is crucial for us to grow and improve the game. We always knew that initial impressions especially from CCG fans were going to be heavily rooted in other games, and that's a totally reasonable starting point. The hope is that as they play and learn more about LoR they're able to see the strengths of what makes the game great.
DanCast: One of the areas where LoR's first impression isn't as great is in our rewards (say for Ranked or Gauntlets).

A sandbox mode would be incredibly useful to help teach new players and give new scenarios for "puzzle" challenges and the like. Is there any technical limitation that makes this mode impossible to make? Or is this entirely impossible?

Leah: There is some technical implications to this unfortunately. As far as "puzzles" such as tutorials go, I know they can take some scripting that is special circumstance, which makes it a large time investment.

Which poro is your favorite?

Dovagedys: Nimble Poro. She's totally awesome. Also during development Steve Rubin (Live Balance Design Lead) wrote a short song about Nimble Poro and I will never forget it.

Love you Riot (?) <--- Question :uwuHeart:

Leah: Oh my, uhm, thank you

Do you think Quinn is acheiving her themeatic fantasy right now? Regardless of power level, do you think she feels 'cool' as a champion?

Dovagedys: I think so. I love Quinn and I'm really happy with her design in LOR. Her level up is one of my favorites.

how much do you take expeditions into account when designing a card (and especially assigning rarity)

Whisper: They are a soft consideration when it comes to initial design of a card. We usually do a larger pass with Expeditions once we know the general shape of the archetype. Rarity is part of that pass, given rarity helps influence appearance rate.

What's your favorite thing about the player base of LoR? Least favorite? spill the tea

DanCast:

Favorite: The dedication to creating a lively, welcoming, and meaningful community space for fans of the game and helping it grow.
Second favorite: The love for Spirit Blossom Corina and recognizing her from the promo art
Least Favorite: I don't know about some of your emote meta hot takes...

Whisper:

Fave: Y'alls meme game is off the charts and I love it
Least: Not enough love and support for the best bot, Slotbot

Dovagedys:

My favorite thing is the overwhelming positivity of the LOR community. I have been playing games on the internet for a very long time and I have never seen so much positivity in a game community before. It's astounding to me. I am very humbled by and proud of the community we are all building for LOR.
My least favorite aspect is the hyperbolic language the community sometimes uses when talking about the metagame, segregating decks that have 52% win rate as playble or S tier and decks that have 50% win rate as tier 2, 3, or even unplayable. I think that language and thought pattern leads to the erroneous idea that there are a small number of decks in the LOR metagame. When the reality is that there are 20-35 decks that all have win rates between 47% and 53%.(edited)

Knowing that in today's time there is a pandemic in the world, how did you deal working from home into developing the game as time passes by?

Leah: The pandemic is definitely a hard thing to deal with.
Gotta keep up that strong mental energy.

can we please get an article on how the spell mana system came to be? (and more design articles in general pls) (and less broad pls, the champions article only had like 2 sentences per champion)

Whisper: That is a great question! No immediate promises, but one thing I personally want to do more is write more design articles for y'all. Knowing what parts of design you want to hear about helps a ton.

Was there ever a specific champion that you loved to main and play as in League of Legends that you wished was in LoR?

Whisper: I keep trying to sneak in Twitch, but the other designers keep too many traps down

2020.08.28 03:52 itsallalittleblurry Threes

I met Barry when we both went to Avionics school at Millington during a misguided attempt of mine at transferring out of the 03 field. He was my roommate when I first got there, and would be for a while. We hit it off right away. Which is fortunate, I guess, where a roomy is concerned.
Barry, I think, remains to this day perhaps the most highly intelligent guy I have ever encountered. He had more than one degree, as I recall, in higher mathematics, and possibly some others -I don’t recall. He was a bit older, though not by a whole lot.
As I said, he had a head for numbers, which could only serve him well in the field in which we had both chosen to endeavor.
I did not, which would occasion me no small distress, and, together with what would quickly become obvious was a complete and utter ineptitude concerning anything more technological than a pencil sharpener, would occasion my eventual dismissal from the training program. I would find myself back at LeJeune, back among my fellow grunts, where, I would completely understand, by that point, I belonged. It would feel like coming home.
Barry would try to help me out, but I was Gomer Pyle to his Stephen Hawkins. Five minutes in, I wouldn’t have a clue what the fuck he was talking about. I would tell him so.
“But it’s so simple, man!”
“Simple for You, Dude! I forgot my own birthday, twice! You got to dumb this shit down for me, man!”
He would do his best, but the gulf between us was just too wide, and I would sink further and further into confusion. I left Gomer behind, and started, more and more, to feel like his dumber cousin Goober, of Andy Griffith fame. But perhaps I do insult to Goober.
We did other things while we were there, of course. I mean, you can’t study All the time (maybe I should have). I would hang out with Barry, sometimes, and sometimes with one other guy I got to know pretty well; another hillbilly such as myself (we always find each other).
The Tennessee State Fair was pretty nice. My favorite thing there was the life-size statue of Dolly Parton carved in butter. It was displayed in the open, under a hot sun, in a refrigerated glass case. A thick cable ran from a hidden power source somewhere.
I studied this masterpiece in open admiration for quite some time. I began to wonder how long it would take for her to melt if someone were to unplug her when no one was looking, and if her boobs would fall off before the rest of her succumbed. I eventually walked away before I succumbed to temptation.
We scored a couple of tickets for a one-night-only Fleetwood Mac concert in Memphis, and were ecstatic! They were good seats. We would be within spitting distance of my idol. I loved Stevie with all the passion in a young man’s heart. Hell, maybe, if I were offensive enough, she Would spit on me! I would have considered it an honor.
It was not to be. The SSgt in charge of us all heard the two of us talking about it, asked around to discover the date of the concert, and put us both on duty that night. Rather than see them go to waste, we gave the tickets to a couple of our guys ( we were both Cpl’s at the time).
They had a wonderful time, in our stead. They both swore that at one point Stevie looked directly at them in the middle of a song. They were escorted out by Security a few minutes later, so perhaps she did.
I don’t recall what we did to incur the SSgt’s disfavor. Perhaps we didn’t smooch his pooper with sufficient fervor. He seemed the type to require it, and we were irreverent.
SSgt, you were a dick then, and I’m sure you’re just as big of one now, if older. Those were third row seats, you asshole!
I’ll meet Stevie one day yet, I swear I will! We’re both a little older, and aren’t the kids we used to be, but I’d still crawl a hundred miles over leggos on my hands and knees with a monkey in a cowboy outfit riding side-saddle just to kiss her ass.
Momma understands. She says she’d trade me and a hundred dollars for a date with Michael Bolton.
Personally, I think that’s disloyal of her. I never said shit about getting rid of Her.
Looking back, there have been other occasions when I have had pause to question her motives. She slapped the shit out of me once as she passed me. I asked what that had been about. She said there had been a mosquito. We were inside at the time.
I once woke one night to find her standing at the side of the bed in the darkness, staring down at me, with one hand held behind her back.
At least I knew what I’d done that time. I slept in another room for a while. With the door locked.
That reminds me of my Gramp and Gram. They would have a sometimes stormy relationship during their more than seventy years of marriage, especially in their younger days.
Gramp worked in rural law enforcement for a time..........among other things. Even when he was not on duty, he was always subject to recall. A signal had been worked out between her and him, to get him to the house as quickly as possible, when she got word that he was needed: she would walk to the edge of the yard and fire a shotgun once into the air, if the matter was urgent, to bring him on the run from where he worked his fields.
She would do this for no reason at all sometimes, when she was mad at him about something, or sometimes purely out of spite.
He would come running, huffing and puffing, out of breath, to the house, sometimes from half a mile away or more, just to find that she’d done it because she felt like it, and for no other reason.
Gram was familiar with firearms. Years later, after Gramp had passed, she, alone without him, took to sleeping with her old revolver under her pillow again.
I find I don’t remember where Barry was actually from, if I ever knew at all. An impression comes to mind of Massachusetts, or somewhere thereabouts, but I know I could be wrong.
I remember Tennessee was nice that time of year. The days could be hot enough, but the nights were nice and cool, and quite pleasant. There were worse places to be.
Barry and I spent a month, off and on, when we had a little time, working on his car at the auto shop on base. We tore the motor down and rebuilt it from the bottom up; cleaned everything up real good, repaired what we could repair, replaced what we couldn’t with new.
We talked about a lot of things while we worked. Well, mostly Barry talked and I listened. Most of the time I didn’t understand a damn thing he was saying ( remember the IQ disparity?), but I nodded along in all the right places.
What the hell is quantum physics and string theory, anyway, and how the fuck can a person exist in the past, in the present, and in the future, all at the same time?
By the time we had it all back together and everything adjusted just right, that old car purred like a kitten, and just a gentle nudge on the accelerator would send the needle dancing. Barry loved that car, and was proud of the job we’d done. I was pretty proud of it myself. He said he couldn’t wait to take her out on the road.
Barry was riding high and life was good, man. He was axing every exam, his baby was in better condition than she had been in years, and everything was coming up roses.
That reminds me of an old ‘76 Monte Carlo I once owned, a big old boat of a car. I had traded my brother a Pontiac Sunbird and a hundred dollars for it. The Sunbird’s transmission blew a month later, but he’d already sold it to another guy for five hundred dollars, so he didn’t care.
Momma and I lost that car a month after we got to our next posting. A damned Gremlin, of all things, and a familiar shade of shit green (the head of AMC’s wife must have picked it out to match her teeth or some shit) plowed into us at speed. It was totaled. So, believe it or not, was the Monte Carlo. I’ve always though maybe it was related to The Dragon, that other piece-of-shit Gremlin I’d slain several months ago, and sacrificed itself for revenge.
A 2nd Lt was driving it. His bud, another Lt, showed up at the scene and started laying into me for being in my work uniform off base (though both of them were, too), and chewing my ass for not having a cover on.
The Highway Patrol Officer who had been first on the scene was a woman. She and Momma kind of looked at each other and kind of started laughing, and he kind of shut up.
We bought a pickup a week later. A month later, I wrecked that, too. There were some others over time. My latest one was a little over a year ago, and that one hurt most of all: a beautiful blood red ‘15 Camaro with an after-market exhaust package and those nice, wide hips that year’s model had. New twenty-inch tires with custom rims. I loved that car.
Momma said it was too much car for an old man. Maybe she was right. There wasn’t enough left of it to drive after running it off the freeway at 98 mph. I caught some nice air for thirty or forty feet when I hit that drainage culvert, though.
I wasn’t always Barry’s roommate while I was there. After a while we moved into a different barracks, for Marine personnel. There were three floors, with an NCO in charge of each one. I had the second.
It was there that I learned the hard way not to fight an already pissed-off Samoan:
There was screaming coming from down the hall one night. I ran out of my room and down the hall to see what was the matter.
We had this big Samoan LCpl, and he was beating the living shit out of his roommate. This kid was half his size, not that it would have mattered, and it was bad! He’d already been hit so hard so many times that the skin on his face was split open and bleeding in half a dozen places; forehead, cheekbones, eyebrows - any surface with bone under the skin. There was blood on the walls, man!
Some other guys had gathered at the doorway, but didn’t want any part of it. Hell, neither did I.
But these were my guys, so my responsibility. I nodded at one of the other guys and said “You’re with me.” I knew I couldn’t handle this guy alone. As it turned out, I should have taken some more - like All of them.
My guy nodded his assent, and we rushed the dude. It wasn’t pretty. At first we tried to wrestle him into submission. It didn’t work.
Then we started fighting him, or trying to. We were giving it everything we had, too. We didn’t make a dent. Instead, he beat the dogshit out of both of us. I distinctly remember, at one point, getting hit so hard that I slammed into and bounced off a wall locker several feet away from where I’d been standing.
As soon as we saw that the other guys had gotten his roomy out of the room and were taking him downstairs, we both did what Custer should have done and let Crazy Horse Have the fucking Little Big Horn. We were fallling over each other trying to get through the doorway.
A minute later, we were in the hallway outside the room, both bent over with our hands on our knees, trying to get our breath back, drooling blood and spit, and dripping blood on the floor from some other places, trying to figure out what the fuck just happened. The Cavalry had ridden to the rescue, and been massacred again.
Meanwhile Sitting Bull was still in the room, pacing up and down and yelling at somebody and taking swings at the air. The fucker, as far as we could see, didn’t seem to have a mark on him.
We were happy about that. It meant he was no longer thinking about us. No shit, if Sasquatch had started for the doorway? - I’d have taken off like a striped- ass ape, and I ain’t ashamed to admit it, ‘cause I know I would have been looking at my LCpl’s back - he was younger than me, and could move faster.
I had thought that I didn’t remember the extent of Kong’s roommates injuries, but, thinking on it, my mind brings up a flattened nose (we knew that), a crushed jawbone, and severe breakage in the bones around one eye - that’s what comes to mind. He took a lot of stitches, too, to put his face back together, but he would never look the same.
Godzilla was sent for a psych eval. Two days later I was inventorying his wall locker. It was stuffed, top to bottom, with cartons of cheap off-brand cigarettes. He had been bying them up cheap and tax-free on base, and selling them at a good profit to someone or someone’s out in town.
The reason he tried to beat his roomy to death? He wanted him to pray with him, and the kid didn’t want to do it. I shit you not.
We were both hurt and hurting for days, my LCpl and me, but nothing that wouldn’t heal.
I was sure I was going to lose some teeth. All the front ones, top and bottom, were loose to the point of falling out. I could move them around with my finger. Could have pulled them out if I wanted to.
Losing the bottom ones might not have been so bad. I knew a SSgt on Oki who had a removable bottom bridge in the front. That guy never lost a watermelon earring contest. He’d pop that bridge half-way out and use the fucker as a scoop to funnel the meat into his mouth, swallowing the whole time - three or four passes, and that shit was Gone, right down to the rind. Took less than five seconds. Couldn’t get anybody to bet against him after a while, no matter what odds we gave.
Loosing those uppers, though - I wouldn’t have wanted that. I like my corn on the cob.
As it was, I was eating soup for two weeks, waiting for everything to firm up again. But that was ok. I like soup.
Remember how I said Barry was happy as a pig in shit, and riding high on the hog?
That’s when the shit gets you, man. It’s like the saying: if everything’s going too well, it’s an ambush. This time Charlie was Mr. Fate.
Remember when he said he couldn’t wait to get his newly rebuilt baby out on the road? He didn’t wait long:
Took her into Memphis that first night. Got staggering drunk.
Picked up a hooker. She stole his wallet, and may have given him a dose of the clap ( results were still pending as of our last conversation).
Baby has gone to that Great Scrapyard In The Sky, among with the two major highway signs she took down on the way back to base.
Remember the Fleetwood Mac concert that the SSgt fucked us out of going to? It was known that a lot of the guys had attended, so there was a surprise piss test the next day. Everybody that had attended the concert passed. Barry came up positive.
When you’re riding too high, you’re heading for a low. And bad luck? - that shit always comes in threes.

2020.08.27 20:56 randomassusername01 UPDATE: First time being pulled over + $345 dollar speeding ticket

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/legaladvice/comments/g3ggh8/first_time_being_pulled_over_speeding_ticket/
Hello everyone,
I wanted to let everyone know the outcome of this. TLDR at bottom
I decided to fight the ticket because it was my first ever offense and it was really unsettling to me how I felt I couldn't slow down with the cop tailing me.
Here is what happened;
Mid-July: Got my court date for mid-August, I submitted an official subpoena to the Massachusetts Records Access Officer for the following, The officer's certification for LIDAR and maintenance records of the LIDAR, I even emailed the RAO directly to ensure my submission was complete and got confirmation (they have 10 days to get me these files or tell me why they cannot)
3 weeks later: I email the RAO asking for the status of my papers as it had been 10+ days (no response)
Original court hearing: I join my zoom court hearing (The officer in the call was not the one who pulled me over) and was asked if I wanted to wait for an in-person hearing and I said no. I told the judge about my subpoena and how I hadn't gotten anything back yet and I asked if that was grounds for dismissal. He said not at that moment. He postponed my hearing to give me more time to get my documents.
4 days later: My documents are emailed to me, officer is certified, the LIDAR is certified, everything is good
10 days later: I join my zoom call with the same judge and same officer from last time and got sworn in, I was asked about the documents and I said everything looked good I just wanted to make sure. He then asked me if I deny going 89 MPH and I thought for a second and told him my answer would be the best if I could tell him what happened. I told him how the car in front of me was swerving and I didn't feel safe being behind or next to a car driving that erratically so I moved to lane 2 and eventually got back into lane 1 and how I saw the police car speed up behind me and how my first thought was oh no I am in the way of this cop I need to move over so I sped up, even more, to move over as this cop was right on my tail all the way into the right lane. I told him I don't doubt the possibility of me going 89 but I could not slow down safely with how close the cop was behind me.

The judge asked the officer in the call if he had any reason to object a dismissal, he said no, and the judge said it was dismissed. He told me I was very prepared and he hopes I don't have to prepare like this again.
TLDR: No ticket for me, I hope I never see anyone in the original comment section going half a mile over the speed limit

Hey there everyone, Was on my way from Massachusetts to Maine earlier today and after entering New Hampshire on Route 95 I passed a bunch of cars in the far left lane as it was wide open and I was in a hurry. Max speed I hit was under 100 mph. I slowed down and got in the right lane once I was closer to the tolls and as I was pulling up the booth I noticed a statue behind me. As soon as I paid he turned his lights on. He came up and asked me what the fuck was going on. I didn’t think he had gotten me for speeding as I hadn’t been going very fast for the past mile or two. He ended up writing me a ticket for reckless operation 100 MPH, after he said that he didn’t see me go under 94 the whole way (which was very bs) but I just complied and took the ticket. My court date is Sept 17 in Hampton NH. Anyone else had this happen to them? Should I get a lawyer? Should I just be honest with the court and apologize and explain to them that I will be out of work if they do the 60 day license suspension and will not be able to pay the $500 minimum fine? Any advice or tips would be much appreciated. Thank you. Ps, I am 18 and do not have any record.

2020.08.09 20:57 lilmacky8abug Consulted flow chart. Still need help with object identification!

Time/Date/Location: Approximately 11:20 pm on August 8th in Boston, Massachusetts.
Object's position in sky: My best guess for angle above the horizon would be between 40-50 degrees, based off of it's position relative to the north star. It appeared to be traveling directly north/NNE along the western half of the sky.
Viewing conditions: Though visibility in Boston is generally very poor, it was clear enough for us to view a few shooting stars, the constellation Andromeda, as well as the planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Humidity was very high (about 80%) so anything below 40 degrees above the horizon was difficult, if not impossible, to see (with the exception of Mars).
My SO and I went out to try and view the perseid meteor shower last night a little after 10 pm. Though viewing conditions were poor, we were able to see a few shooting stars and the planets I mentioned above. We sat along the harbor with the airport in full view across the water, so planes were frequently flying in and out of the area.
At around 11:20 pm I saw out of the corner of my I what I thought at first to be a satellite. It had no lights so it was definitely not a plane, and appeared to be lit up by some external source, either from the moon or the sun below the horizon. Closer inspection found that it was not a satellite (at least not from what we could tell). In terms of size, it looked to be about the same size as a plane would appear in the sky (at high altitude, not while landing/taking off), and both my SO and I could make out a rough shape.
To me, the object looked like two spheres closely orbiting one another. My SO thought it looked cylindrical in shape, though he agreed that the two ends were lit up in a way so that it looked like two spheres. the strangest thing about this object was that the whole thing was rotating (think a bottle spinning on its side like when you play 'spin the bottle') and we estimate that it was completing one rotation about every 3 seconds. Aside from the rotation, it was traveling in a straight line at a speed somewhere between that of a plane and a satellite. We observed the object for about 1-2 minutes before light pollution nearer to the horizon made it too difficult to see.
I'm hoping someone here can help me figure out what it is I saw. I've always loved astronomy (my interest motivated me to get a degree in physics, which I completed back in May) and am a very science-minded person, so hopefully I don't come across as some conspiracy nut or anything. What I saw really has me scratching my head though and I would love an explanation!
Side note: Though visible, the object was still very dim and I was unable to photograph or take a video of it. I also don't know what altitude it was flying at. Since we were able to make out a rough shape, I want to say it was lower than a satellite, however beyond that I couldn't say.

2020.07.28 20:20 jtothekbjj Fixing a ticket turned warrant

I was at the wrong end of a speeding ticket outside of Atlanta, Ga a few years ago. There was a lot of traffic and the officer who pulled me over claimed I was going 93 miles per hour (I wasn’t). The ticket he gave me didn’t have any monetary penalty attached, but rather a: “check online in two weeks for your amount to pay.” When it finally posted, it was something like $580. I was just out of the army and going to school part time while working full time in Massachusetts. I called to ask what could be done, and I was told I could show up to the courthouse on the following day. That was obviously out of the question, if I could fly to Georgia, I would just pay the ticket. I told them I can’t afford to pay or get to the courthouse, and even asked if there were payments accepted. They said if I didn’t show up to that court date that I would be jailed if I ever set foot there again. Unfortunately, my mother is in poor health and lives in Georgia. I’m trying to do what I can to figure this out and have the chance to visit her again without fear of unjust punishment. Any advice? I can give more info if necessary, I’ve never had to do this before.
Edit: I have been searching for places and organizations that would help me (specifically veterans legal aid) in my search for answers. Does anyone have any ideas as to which specific steps I can take at this point in time?

2020.07.27 04:15 cookrunsleeprepeat Beer Marathon 2020

Race Information

Training
Currently training for the virtual Boston Marathon and had a 20M long run on the schedule. Figured I’d make it more interesting. I’ve been following Pfitz 18/55, but only for distance since I haven’t felt the need to push speed in the summer heat with no actual races on the calendar.
Pre-race
Woke up at 3:15AM (yikes!) to have breakfast and organize for the start. Plan was to get an early start to beat traffic and the heat.
Race
As a disclaimer, I chose to drink Harpoon Rec. League both for its fitting name, but also its relatively lower ABV (4%). I wanted a challenge but wanted to keep it somewhat responsible too. Transitions included drinking, eating and a bathroom stop.
Transition/Loop 1: Started just before 4:30AM by starting my watch then cracking my first beer. Still dark, so I wore a reflective vest and used a headlamp. Rustled up a lot of rabbits! Felt good, even up “Hiccup Hill”, which was a large hill halfway through each loop. (Transition – 2:42, Run – 45:16).
Transition/Loop 2: Sun was up, so I ditched the vest and headlamp. Had a half banana with the beer. Nothing too momentous, but it was still early. (Transition – 4:58, Run – 44:50).
Transition/Loop 3: Took my one bathroom break during the transition, which made this one my longest. Also ate another half banana. Still feeling good, but noticed some fatigue starting to set in. (Transition – 6:01, Run – 44:40).
Transition/Loop 4: Forgot my banana, so this one was fueled on beer alone. Kept the pace consistent, but definitely noticed my HR was starting to creep up at this point. (Transition – 3:42, Run – 44:42).
Transition/Loop 5: Had an entire banana to make up for my missed half in the last transition. This was the only loop that was a real struggle. It was starting to get warmer and I had to push to maintain my previous pace. HR just kept going up, but I pushed through, knowing this was the final loop. (Transition – 3:31, Run – 45:00).
Transition 6: Did not want another beer after finishing the run but had to complete the 6-pack! Remember saying, “This is awful”. Finished and got surprised with a custom medal made from one of the beer cans, which was super nice! (Transition – 0:57).
Post-race
I celebrated with a beer! Haha, just kidding, I just enjoyed the rest of the weekend. I was a bit tired but didn’t feel that badly once I stopped running. Cheers!

2020.07.26 15:10 Qalmahdari Inadequate Urban Transportation Facilities Leave the Poor in India High and Dry

The haphazard and unplanned growth of Indian cities has led to a severe crisis in terms of urban mobility, resulting in congestion, vehicular pollution, and road accidents. Compounding the problem of urban mobility, a pitiable public transportation system has severely affected the poor in accessing avenues of education, employment, among others.
India has been urbanising at a rapid pace. As per the estimates of 2011, 31.14% of the population lives in cities and towns, up from 25.73% in 1991 (MoHUA 2019). About 43% of the revenue in India’s gross domestic product (GDP) is generated by 100 most populous cities in the country, emphasising the significance of urbanisation for the economy. However, our cities are also the places where distortions of the development are reproduced.
Rapid urbanisation and the policy landscape around it have had a profound impact on the way urban transportation has evolved in the country. The common characteristic of the urban development in India has been the growth of urban areas outside municipality boundaries, resulting in sprawls and unplanned growth. Rather than being proactive, our planning institutions tend to plan for infrastructure and services retrospectively (Shirgaokar 2014). Due to increasing sprawls, rapid motorisation, and lopsided urban transportation policymaking, urban mobility has become increasingly disadvantageous for the urban poor. Cities have thus become an exclusive space for the “elite and white-collar workforce” (IIHS 2012; IIHS 2015; Batra 2009).
While the overall mobility has improved over the years, due to the high sprawl, the accessibility for various services for most city dwellers has gone down, and so has the overall speed in terms of vehicular traffic on roads (Pojani and Stead 2017; Pucher and Lefèvre 1996). Add to it the “metropolitan bias” that is integral to urban transportation policymaking and municipal funding, urban mobility in India has been going through a crisis. Congestion, vehicular pollution, and road accidents are some of the extreme outcomes of this crisis. These extreme outcomes have been turning our cities increasingly into an inequitable space, making it difficult for the poor to access avenues of employment, education, among other facilities (Khan 2014; Samanta 2017; Pucher et al 2005; IIHS 2015).
This article aims to give an overview of the urban transportation in India with a particular focus on equity aspects at the two levels: first, the intracity impact of the transportation policies on various groups of citizens; and second, the glaring manner in which one class of cities (particularly, metropolitan cities) gets priority over the smaller cities and towns in terms of investments, policies, and the public discourse.
The article highlights the relationship between the transportation modes and the urban forms, and how congestion is not merely restricted to big cities, but rather many smaller cities are more congested than metros.
The article then discusses the salient features of urban transportation in smaller cities, and how poor citizens live and commute in urban India. There is an inherent bias towards motorised transport, which is discussed next, and it is followed by a section on why India has not seen any form of resistance pertaining to urban issues. The paper concludes with two case studies. The World Bank-funded Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) will be discussed to highlight the dynamics of transport policymaking in a metro city. The second case study is about the state of transportation in Ranchi, and how the city has been symbolic of what is wrong with the non-metro cities in India when it comes to transport planning and policies.
The author has relied on existing literature on urban transportation, reports from official agencies, like the World Bank, and his personal experience of having worked in the field of urban transportation in Mumbai for the last eight years, and his frequent stays in Ranchi. Semi-structured interviews with citizens and officials (from the field) were conducted in Mumbai and Ranchi during the course of writing this article.[1]

Transportation Modes and Urbanisation

The motorised personal modes of transport (cars and two-wheelers) constitute 85% of vehicles on roads, and yet they form just 29% of overall trips in India (IIHS 2012). Public transportation services account for 27% in urban areas, but with larger cities like Mumbai, it goes up to 44%, and it is 57% for Kolkata (IIHS 2012; MoHUA 2019).
Urban public transport is mainly used by city dwellers who may be employed in the formal sector, and hence they can afford the fare (Rathi 2017). Buses are the predominant form of public transport. Yet, these services have been generally bad, and the poor have been finding it difficult to afford, even though, most often, fares are heavily subsidised. Almost 40% of people in urban areas either walk or use bicycles (Badami and Haider 2007).
Urban congestion has been a common phenomenon on Indian roads, primarily because various kinds of vehicles move at different speeds, and there does not exist any appreciable degree of separation of lanes for different modes of transportation (Badami 2005). Traffic for the most part of the day on Indian roads is generally slow, and it is not because of the high volume of vehicular traffic, but due to “low uncongested mobility.” This applies not just to the metro cities but also to small- and medium-sized cities (Abhishek 2018; World Bank 2018). The fundamental reason behind higher congestion in our cities, even though we have far lower vehicle ownership, is due to the fact that infrastructure planning for urban transportation is hardly demand-driven, and rather, it is “based on political decisions” (Ahmad and A Puppim de Oliveira 2016).
While government policies continue to promote haphazard urbanisation, it has concurrently led to a major reduction in the non-motorised transport (NMT) usage (IIHS 2015). Cities with lower per capita income tend to have a higher bicycling share as a mode of transportation (Mahadevia 2008). However, these cities are most vulnerable to losing their share of walking and cycling modes as they do not have a well-developed public transportation system, unlike big cities. Increasing congestion in the cities creates a vicious cycle, particularly for cities where buses constitute a major mode of public transportation, as service delays stemming from bus operators force commuters to shift from buses to personal modes of transportation (like, two-wheelers). This further exacerbates the problem of traffic congestion on urban roads (IIHS 2015).
Some of the widely employed methods to ease congestion on roads have been through the laying of new roads, building flyovers, among others, which have only contributed to increasing congestion and sprawl in the urban areas (Rathi 2017; Gogoi 2013; Gupta 2014). In some cases, they have created extremely inequitable car-only facilities. A case in point is that of Bandra–Worli Sea Link, which does not allow pedestrians, cyclists, two-wheelers, and auto-rickshaws. The attempts to ensure that infrastructure for motorised transport is adequate have demonstrated that they are bound to fail, as the supply has not been able to match the rising urbanisation in India. As a matter of fact, these newly developed infrastructural facilities have found to benefit higher-income road users (Heymann and Barrera 2013).

Urban Transportation in Non-metro Cities

It is the small- and medium-sized cities where urbanisation has been taking place rapidly compared to the metropolitan cities. These cities, owing to the less developed transportation infrastructure, have been facing bigger challenges. About half of urban India lives in smaller towns and cities, which have less than half a million population (Ahmad and A Puppim de Oliveira 2016). A large urban population in these towns live in slums and informal settlements so that their average travelling distance, for work and other purposes, is less than five kilometres a day (Tiwari 2013).
With the absence of a well-developed public transportation system, it is no wonder that motorised two-wheeler growth has been higher in the hinterland than in major cities. Due to the absence of government policies to address this issue, increased motorisation has been leading to a far higher congestion in the towns, with their road network incapable of absorbing the rise in the vehicular traffic. The level of congestion in smaller cities can be estimated from the fact that six of the 20 slowest cities in India do not feature in the list of top 100 cities by population globally. To put things in perspective, Bhagalpur in Bihar, with a population of just 0.4 million, is slower than Chennai, which has a population of 8.7 million (World Bank 2018; Abhishek 2018).
As per Badami and Haider (2007), buses are the most cost-effective mode of public transport, and they should be promoted in these cities, as urban rail is economically not viable. Mohan (1997) and Badami (2005) clarify that metro and rail-based modes of public transportation are too expensive for the poor (Mohan 1997; Badami 2005).

The Impact of Haphazard Urbanisation on the Poor

Increasing urbanisation comes with its own challenges. Despite rising income levels, urbanisation has always been associated with urban poverty. In Delhi, more than half of the city’s population lives in slums, and same is the case with Mumbai. The poor tend to live as close to their workplace as possible to keep their commuting distance short and to minimise transportation costs (Tiwari 2002; Badami 2005). They live mostly in unplanned settlements, generally in slums.
Most of the urban poor cannot even afford the most inexpensive motorised vehicles, and yet, they bear the maximum brunt of the externalities associated with the motorised transportation, resulting in road accidents and vehicular emissions. Although India has far less number of motor vehicles than the United States (US), its traffic casualties are far more, which proves that the negative impact of motor vehicles in India (and other developing countries) is far more than what it is in the developed world (Badami 2005).

Inequity in Urban Transportation

When it comes to smaller cities, public-run bus services are either unavailable or else the capacity of the authorities to address issues with the system is severely restricted compared to the metropolitan cities. This seems to be majorly due to the growth in the personal motorised vehicles, and the concurrent reduction of other modes of transport, like cycling and the use of three wheelers.
The presence of a viable and cheap bus system does not solve all the problems. For poor households, even the normal bus fares are beyond their reach (Goel and Tiwari 2016). A majority of these households are the ones who commute either by walking or bicycling, and hence, the absence of a dedicated pedestrian and cycling infrastructure leads to the exclusion of a majority of these city dwellers who are in any way compelled to walk or use bicycle, even though the city does not invest in developing these modes of transportation (World Bank 2005). Most of the gap in the first- and last-mile connectivity in big cities, and the absence of public transportation in medium-sized and smaller cities, is filled by para-transit (Rathi 2017; Embarq 2011). They are generally cheap and used by city dwellers for travelling short distances. However, the regulatory mechanism governing para-transit has been generally too weak, vague, and partially enforced where they exist, which makes them unsafe and results in environment pollution (Embarq 2011). The quality of their services varies from one city to another and from one part to another within the same city.

Mumbai Urban Transport Project: A Missed Opportunity for Pedestrians and Cyclists

Suburban rail in Mumbai, which has been termed as the city’s lifeline, and used by more than eight million commuters daily, also happens to be the cheapest mode of public transport in the city. Yet, it has been accorded a low priority, and hence, it has not been well integrated with the other modes of transport. More importantly, there is a poor first- and last-mile connectivity (Rathi 2017; Ravibabu and Sree 2014). Even though efforts have been underway for the last five years, an integrated ticketing system linking suburban railway with the public bus transport (and with metro rail and monorail) has not been successful.
The World Bank-funded MUTP is, probably, the most ambitious project for the modernisation and the upgradation of urban mobility in Mumbai. It started in 2002, and till date, two phases have already been implemented, and the third phase is in progress. Till date, more than $1,400 million has been spent primarily on the upgradation of the suburban train system, and some funds in phase I have also been spent on the upgradation of the bus system.
One of the major objectives of the project has been to decongest Mumbai suburban railways. However, the congestion in the trains could not be brought down as per the targets set under the MUTP 1 or MUTP 2. The Independent Evaluation Group (IEG), the entity responsible for assessing the impact of various projects funded by the World Bank, termed the project as “moderately satisfactory” as the demands increased more than increased capacity.
More than its failure in reducing congestion, what is intriguing is the manner in which infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists has been totally ignored in the project. The first phase of the project did have some plans for traffic crossings for pedestrians, however, all but two were dropped from the plan, along with cutbacks on many other fronts, due to restructuring of the loan owing to the delays in the implementation of the project (World Bank 2016; Agarwal 2011). That a mega urban transport improvement project of worth $642.96 million could not plan substantial funds for improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists speaks volumes about the inherent inequity in the urban transportation landscape in India (Abhishek 2019).

Ranchi: A Case of Misplaced Priorities

Ranchi is a medium-sized city with a population of 1.46 million, which grew by 30% between 2001 and 2011. Use of personalised vehicles in the city has been increasing at a rapid pace. This has resulted in increasing congestion in the city’s central areas, even though only 22% of the total trips in the city are made using personal motorised vehicles. About 44% of trips are by walking or on bicycles, even though less than 1% of the road network has sidewalks for pedestrians (ITDP 2015). The city is the country’s 17th slowest city, even though it stands in 38th position in terms of population, and it “faces acute public-transport deficiencies” (World Bank 2018; Census 2011).
The development of public transport in the city has had a chequered history. In 2009–10, under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), a total of 70 buses were procured for Ranchi. These new buses were grounded for almost a year as the state government could not find bidders for operating them. These buses were then handed over to the state’s tourism department, which began operations by contracting out each bus to a group of four to five individuals. The delayed start and the subsequent unusual contractual agreements (involving multiple individuals as a single entity) for each bus for operations have reflected the lack of previous experience on the part of the state government to run intra-city buses.
Within three years, problems of maintenance and other issues, including route planning and fares, came to the fore, and one after the other these buses were surrendered to the government by the operators. Regular operations ceased from mid-2013 until the end of 2014. In early 2015, 65 of the 70 buses were repaired and handed over to the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC). Of the remaining five buses, four were beyond repair and the fifth one got damaged in a fire accident. Of the 65 buses, a total of 51 buses were made fit to operate and were contracted out to a private entity for operations for two years. By the time this contract expired, another set of 26 new buses (smaller buses with 26 seaters) had been procured. The old JNNURM buses (all 65 of them) too were made fit for operations, and a single contract for the running of all the 91 buses (65 old and 26 new ones) was given to a new entity. As per the contract the buses were to be operated on three identified routes, and the contractor had to pay Rs 250 per bus per day for old buses and Rs 451 per bus per day for new ones. The new contractor found it difficult to run all the buses, and 25 buses were given to another contractor on the same terms and conditions (though his route was the one where passenger demand was fairly high). However, the new contract was mired in problems from the beginning, and in due course, there were payment defaults and other issues that led to the annulment of the contract. Re-tendering failed for nine times as no contractor came forward, and all the buses had remained grounded during 2017–18 for almost eight to nine months.
Another effort to restart the buses was initiated, and this time, the RMC gave buses to individual drivers at a daily rate of Rs 251 per bus. The drivers were to ply these buses on two nominated routes—22 buses (including two buses designated for women commuters) on Kutchery–Rajendra Chowk route and 25 buses on Dhurwa–Kantatoli route. This has been the model on which government buses have been operating till date in the city.
As is evident in the above section, smaller cities have been left to fend for themselves and it all comes to the tenacity of the city officials and the state administration if they wish to have a robust public bus transport system. After the initial support by the urban development ministry (previously Ministry of Urban Affairs, now Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs [MoHUA]) through the JNNURM project, it appears that the priorities of the ministry have shifted from bus to big-ticket projects, like metro rails and Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS). Post JNNURM, there has been no large scale support system to support public bus projects under MoHUA.
Auto rickshaws have been the mainstay of transportation in the city. However, in the absence of a uniform policy and enforcement mechanism, the city has a surfeit of auto rickshaws. There are about 2,300 road transport authority (RTA) authorised and more than 18,000 unauthorised auto-rickshaws plying in the city (based on authors’ discussion with the city officials in May 2020; the data represents status as in September 2019), and most ply on already congested routes having maximum number of passengers. Various attempts to regulate them with measures such as, route nomination, quick response (QR) code, and coloured passes, among others, have not been successful.
The development and regulation of cycle rickshaws too, during recent years, has not been smooth. In 2017, the RMC came up with a scheme to promote e-rickshaws and a total of 65 e-rickshaws were given to the erstwhile manual rickshaw pullers at 90% subsidy. In due course when the costs of e-rickshaws came down, contractors entered the sector and there came a time when one person owned as many as 40 to 50 e-rickshaws. There has been an exponential increase in the registration of these e-rickshaws from 2017–18 onwards. Attempts have been made to regulate them too, by identifying 29 routes and rationally putting a cap on the maximum number that could run on each route, but they have not been successful, owing to problems in the enforcement.
With all the above issues and shortcomings in the city’s mobility, it is pertinent to point out that that the city administration should have invested more in cheap, efficient, and robust bus services, and with an adequate focus on developing integrated bike lanes and pedestrian networks, and a fairly regulated para-transit on feeder routes.
Instead, the state administration has planned for a monorail, which would be funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), even though it has been demonstrated that the only operational monorail system in the country is in Mumbai, which also has been termed as a “costly failure” (Dey and Mazumdar 2015). However, the project has been rejected by the central government on technical grounds and a new plan for metro rail has been developed, and it is expected to start its operations from 2021 (Telegraph 2019). Currently, the city’s public transportation needs are primarily met by para-transit system (ITDP 2015) and by the government city buses on the main routes.

The Road Ahead

As per Tiwari (2013), bus transport is required in every city irrespective of its size, as metros, owing to issues, like coverage and affordability, can only satisfy a limited clientele. Even in the best-case scenario for metros and buses, half of the journey would still be done by walking, cycling, or by relying on rickshaws. Therefore, the public bus transportation system has to be a priority in urban mobility planning.
Even with its shortcomings, Mumbai, with almost half of its population using public transport, is an example of how higher economic growth does not mean more dependence on the personal motorised transport, and it shows how interventions and policies impact what travelling options people have in a city (Roychowdhury and Dubey 2018).
Ranchi, as a city, exemplifies how urban mobility tends to get complicated even in smaller non-metro cities if priorities are not made as per the needs. A comparison of these two cities also brings home the point that smaller cities are more prone to negative externalities of faulty urban transport planning than the big cities, even though it is the big cities and metros that get far more importance, be it in terms of funding or transportation planning discourse. Therefore, it is important that transportation planning is done in a manner that prioritises sustainable mobility solutions. This is the only way to make urban mobility equitable and just.

I did, in fact, fat-finger post this right after finishing the Yukikaze bit.
Spoiler warning: long-but-important foreword.
You don't need me to tell you, again, that the way WG sells the cosmetic stuff (commanders, camos) is pretty much targeted towards whales and that asking more for the camo set than what I paid for Death Stranding last weekend is completely ridiculous. Other people on this subreddit have told you about that already and they're completely right. It is ridiculous.
I remember buying the Hood commander (I am a card carrying member of the HMS Hood Association so I sort of had to) for about a tenner during the first collab. This being a gateway drug into AL itself aside, I felt like that was a fair price. Unless you're this invested in AL and also drowning in money, I wouldn't recommend getting the whole set of commanders and/or camos.
THAT SAID, other people have laid out why this monetisation scheme is silly already. WG is selling the ships and new camos separately this time around, and we're here for the ships. The title says weeb ships. Talking about the actual ships here, not the girls.
This is going to be closer to my short form reviews I did with the French destroyer event because I'm still trying to get my head back into the review game a bit. I should've put this into the afterword.
If you're just going to bitch about how much you hate anime, find a different thread. Let people enjoy the stuff they like. I implore you.
Without further ado-

BOATS

Including the two ships from the last event in this because like... why not, I guess.

Tier VIII - Yukikaze

Full disclosure that I played this thing only a handful of times after the live testing period ended, nanoda. She really confronted me with the fact my torpedo marksmanship fizzled to dust and blew away in the wind in the last year or so, nanoda.
I'm not doing this speech quirk bullshit for much longer. Nanoda.

The good stuff

  • I think I'm traditionally supposed to start with the main battery. That would usually spell rather bad news for an IJN DD, but they got buffed a while ago...
  • Which means that Yukikaze's 6-gun 12.7cm broadside hits pretty hard! 2.1k (and change) HE alpha is more than German 15cm guns get (lol) and if you use these in an ''ambush predator'' sort of way instead of a ''close range knife fighting HE DPM face melt'' sort of way, they can do work.
  • We're long past the days of an IJN DD being able to strip mounts off USN DDs on the first salvo though, unfortunately.
  • Like her shells, her torpedoes also hit really hard. The high torpedo alpha is a crown that IJN destroyers mostly still haven't relinquished, and with the current FOTM destroyer line launching warp speed pool noodles, this is a real niche they still sort of have.
  • Seriously, approximately 21k torpedo damage before saturation/TDS modifiers is nothing to sneer at, and being able to put 8 of these on target gives Yukikaze a wallop that's... matched by essentially the entire IJN torpedo destroyer line from tier 8 and up...
  • I'm trying so hard to find good things to say about Yukikaze nanoda
  • IJN destroyers do keep their concealment crown, and 5.4km surface concealment and 2.5km air concealment (when you turn your AA off, as you really should do) are very respectable even in this day and age. It at the very least gives Yukikaze a good buffer for launching torpedoes when she does actually find a victim.
  • The camouflage looks really, really nice, with a nice set of colours and a cute bow on the... bow. Do you get it?

The bad stuff

  • Boy oh boy.
  • Nanoda.
  • IJN main battery alpha comes with the huge caveat of ''their rof is fucking garbage''. There are more destroyers that don't have 3-4s rof in the game by now, but 6.3 seconds(!) at tier 8 is just really, really slow. You're not going to be winning knife fights with these rather lethargic guns.
  • They also turn really slowly, and with four of your six guns being sat on your ass, getting guns on target can be a somewhat awkward proposal.
  • Her maneuvrability is perfectly middling, with a perfectly middling 35 knot speed (which is in cruiser and some BB realms nowadays) and a perfectly middling 640m turning radius all adding up to something... really average. Average is not a good thing to be for Yukikaze, nanoda.
  • There was a time where having 76 knot-speedy torpedoes would qualify this ship as a cruise missile launcher. With European destroyers showing up with their equally fast (and sometimes even faster) torpedoes, Yukikaze's F3s have lost some of their shine.
  • What really hurts them more than some Swedish dweeb sticking hyperdrives to pool noodles, though, is that setting up torpedo runs within 8km from your target is not something that can be consistently done in current year.
  • This is compounded by Yukikaze having really shitty AA to dislodge planes that latch on to her with (to the point you should really, really, really just keep it turned off unless a plane squad is almost directly over you already, anyway)...
  • ... and her rather paltry HP pool of 15.1k meaning she'll wither away rather quickly under fire.
  • I guess in this sense she is true to her AL counterpart (except her AL counterpart gets some really good skills and evasion to make up for it, which will not save her here).
In conclusion, Yukikaze is basically a Kagero with F3s. That's the tl;dr. Unless you think the girl (and her accompanying camo) are just that cute, I can't recommend getting her, simply because it's furiously difficult to get mileage out of F3s nowadays.

Tier VIII - Montpelier

The worst Cleveland, especially in a world where Biloxi and Birmingham exist. Fight me.

The good stuff

  • There isn't any.
  • What do you mean I can't make this review solely about how much Montpelier sucks?
  • Okay then.
  • Montpelier is a Cleveland, and with this comes all the boons of having a Cleveland's main battery.
  • What I mean by that is the IFHE nerf did very little to stop tier 8+ light cruisers being the absolute DPM monsters they've been for the last few years, and merely made them rather less burny. I still firmly believe in IFHE for cruisers at tier 8 and over, and Montpelier is no exception.
  • 12 USN 6'' guns capable of penning 37mm of HE plating (and thus the all-important 32mm threshold) with a 7s reload time adds up to fairly devastating amounts of HE DPM and will absolutely melt poorly plated battleships and everything else into slag before long.
  • Even if you don't believe in IFHE anymore (which is perfectly valid, given there are a great many ships that have decent plating, too) Montpelier still boasts enough HE pen to melt any lower-tiered battleships and pretty much every cruiser short of Russian supercruisers, with a 12% base fire chance to make angled battleships regret every choice that has led them to this point.
  • All of this compounded to trebuchet arcs that make it childishly easy to sit behind an island and absolutely fucking ruin someone's day. Like Cleveland, Montpelier is nasty (not in that sense though, stop).
  • wowsft and gm3d tell me she has .15 better sigma than Cleveland. Wow!
  • One of the funny bits of USN cruiser protection schemes is that there's a very notable ''step'' in their already fairly low citadels, which puts roughly half their citadel volume firmly below the waterline. While broadsiding stuff isn't quite as legit a strategy as with like, Smolensk (Monty is rather fat for a CL), battleships will sometimes struggle to make damage stick on you.
  • The AA is... alright, I guess...? Same and lower-tier carriers are likely not going to want to stick in your AA for a long time, and if some nerd in a carrier does smack into your flak you can really rip some decent chunks out of squads. You're just not really a no-fly zone.
  • The 660m turning circle radius is nice, I guess?????
  • 11.5km base concealment (you get a free permoflage with this, I'm considering it base) is really, really good for a CL. With all the bells and whistles, Montpelier's concealment drops down to a very, very respectable 9.3km surface concealment and an okay 5.8km air concealment (which actually means you can kind of AA trap planes).
  • Montpelier is a little fatter than her older sister (get fucked), with a 37.5k HP pool. Neat!
  • She also has the usual US CL toolbox at her disposal; 9km half-a-minute radar, hydro, DFAA, the works.
  • As much as I dislike Montpelier, the special camo looks kind of nice. It's flashy (more flashy than the Yukikaze one), but the colour palette is good and the angry vein thing on the bow is a fun touch. Too bad Montpelier still sucks.

The bad stuff

  • It's Montpelier, which we've firmly established is the worst Cleveland.
  • As punchy as the main battery still is in current year, she actually punches a little less hard than Cleveland, with her guns taking half a second longer to reload than her big sister's guns. Poor Monty, forever in the better Clevelands' shadows.
  • The trebuchet arcs are a fantastic boon for firing from the safety of islands, but also make it furiously difficult to nail fast, small ships (like destroyers) at longer ranges.
  • She has a big ol DP secondary battery that is completely useless for doing another other than making pretty fireworks. I figured I should at least discuss the smattering of 5''/38 guns once, but they're really not very useful against ships.
  • Apart from their tendency to let battleship shells right through, Cleveland hulls are super flimsy. The lack of citadel armour coverage means the vast majority of these ships consists of 25mm plating, which gets absolutely fucking melted by most 6'' HE and up, and heavens forbid a battleship gets a good salvo against your angled ship. You will die. Hard.
  • I tried making a Die Hard reference since I love those movies but my brain was not cooperating. Sucks.
  • 32.5 knots base speed is really pretty bleh for a cruiser, especially now that even some battleships can outrun you. Montpelier isn't a particularly good kiting ship as a consequence, and will very likely suffer in open water.
  • Montpelier sucks. I will not budge. If you're a Montpelier fan, fuck you. That's rude but also I don't care. How can you prefer Montpelier when Biloxi exists???
In conclusion, she's a Cleveland with slightly more HP, slightly better accuracy, and slightly less DPM. This doesn't add up to anything particularly flashy, but Cleveland herself isn't a particularly bad ship, and I'd actually recommend Montpelier even to the non-weeb; she's basically a premium Cleveland, which isn't a bad thing to be.

Tier VIII - Littorio

Lord forgive me, for I'm about to thirst.
I'm going to do a bit less bullet point recap here because I already wrote a Roma review that you should really just read instead of a shitty tl;dr. It's old and a bit dated, but most of it still rings true.
Littorio is, rather disappointingly, a Roma clone. There was a version in testing I'm not sure I'm allowed to discuss, but we all know about it and how much more interesting it would've been than a Roma clone.
Thirst time: AL Littorio is hot. I love how they shoved the ''chauvinistic, womanising Italian'' stereotype into her (I get to say this, since half my family is Italian) and I really, really, really like her base design.
The camouflage they put together for her is really good, too, being a lot more lowkey than the Yukikaze and Montpelier camos, with some tasteful touches and references to Littorio herself. The problem is, though, that she's just a Roma clone to the point they didn't fucking bother to model the different bow.
I can't recommend her if you already have Roma, as a consequence. Maybe if she was... different and interesting, but as it stands, no. Just no. What a disappointment.
If you don't have Roma and wanna pick her up, and you like AL, well, why not? The camo is cool and Littorio could break my spine over her knee if she wanted to. Awooga.

Tier IX - Sovetskaya Rossiya

Tall ice mage battleship mommy. Soyuz hull. Mmmmmmmmm.

The good stuff

  • It's a Soyuz with regular battleship accuracy.
  • Alright, alright, since you're twisting my arm here, a more detailed recap of tall ice mage battleship mommy...
  • A well-known feature of Russian ships in general is, well, railguns. This has a whole host of implications for Rossiya.
  • For one, with AP alpha being a function of muzzle velocity (MV) and shell weight, Rossiya has really punchy shells, lagging only slightly behind USN superheavy AP with 13250hp worth of dick punching potential.
  • High muzzle velocity also means higher penetration. USN AP actually outpens Rossiya until about 6km or so (surprisingly), but after that she massively overtakes her American counterpart. Rossiya retains enough pen to smash any battleship's belt out to pretty much her max range.
  • And, finally, high muzzle velocity has the rather natural boon of being quicker to get on target, which makes it substantially easier for tall battleship mommy to push some kiting dweeb's shit in in hopefully spectacular fashion.
  • This is both a plus and a minus, but Rossiya uses regular battleship dispersion and not the good-at-short-range-but-less-good-at-long-range Soviet dispersion curve. She plays more like a traditional battleship as a consequence, with a playstyle that takes after sluggish, large battleships like Izumo as a consequence.
  • The true star attraction with Rossiya (as it kind of is with Soyuz as well) is just how durable she is.
  • This is gonna need some EXTRA BULLET POINTS. Rossiya is drowning in protected volume, with a tall incremental belt more than thick enough to keep out lesser battleship guns at sufficient range, and a 60mm upper hull and midships weather deck... which is just enough to shatter all cruiser HE, except some really specific IFHE builds that nobody runs anymore.
  • There's a 220mm belt extension to make her ends a little tougher to HE spam, too. The Soyuz hull is deviously HE-resistant as a consequence of all this, and overmatching AP only really has the bow and stern to go through.
  • The superstructure would ordinarily be a ripe target for HE spam, but Rossiya's superstructure is a lot narrower than the actual profiel would have you suspect, with a significant chunk of it being taken up by the secondary battery and directors.
  • The TDS backs up all this durability, with 35% damage reduction, which is really funny because Soyuz actual had the Pugliese system (bad) except inserted backwards (worse).
  • Rossiya does get the Soviet flavour damage control, which reloads faster at the expense of being limited in usage.
  • Once again, the camo looks really good. As with Littorio's, it's a lot more lowkey than the second collab's camo colours, dominated by greys and whites, with stark white and light grey turrets and some glowy blue bits on the bow. It's a really snazzy, slick looking scheme and I like it a lot.

The bad stuff

  • You may have noticed the good stuff list was dominated by all the cardinal elements of a battleship; firepower and durability.
  • Yeah that's because that's the main things Rossiya offers.
  • The turrets are sluggish (unlike Soyuz actual's). They're not the slowest in the game by any stretch, but 4deg/s base rotation speed is just... not very good.
  • The dispersion curve means she actually has worse dispersion at short and middling ranges, which... yeah.
  • For all her tankiness, Rossiya does share one (frustratingly uncommon) trait with her line comrades: her citadel rises up above the water. It isn't as tall as her belt suggests, and there's a Bullshit Void of Slightly Less Bullshit behind it, but she is not citadel-proof by any stretch. Any prolonged periods of showing broadside are liable to be followed by some battleship feeding you shit by the spoonful.
  • The ship itself is insanely sluggish. 28 knots is on the low end of battleship speed (she's not one of the battleships that's going to outrun Montpelier) these days, and the turning circle is enormous.
  • Bonus: you get the as-designed hull without the gimped rudder shift. Downside to this bonus: your AA is pretty shocking for the tier, and for some reason Rossiya gets the base hull HP (80.9k).
  • Unlike what the shipgirl suggests (tall majestic ice mage), Sovetskaya Rossiya the ship is a big brute, with little in the way of subtlety, nuance or agility, and some decent firepower and a lotta durability to compensate. Sort of. She tries.
  • She is such a big brute that she has atrocious base concealment, sitting at 16.2km. With all the bells and whistles, this bottoms out at 13.1km, which is not very good for a slow battleship with something of a tendency to fall apart when showing broadside.
In conclusion, Sovetskaya Rossiya is essentially an A-hull Soyuz that loads slower, has regular dispersion, and doesn't have the gimpy rudder shift.
Does this all add up to a worthwhile variant of Soyuz herself? Well... No. The camouflage looks good, but Rossiya feels awkward and clumsy, and while her playstyle is oriented to that, she isn't really going to set the world on fire. She's not bad, but unless you're really invested in the girl (can't blame you), she is not worth the hefty pricetag she carries.
This was a fun little writing exercise. I've been a bit out of it, with... a lot... happening after I wrote the Warspite thing for Horsey's birthday. I didn't feel it was right writing reviews after that, but here we are. I want to move on from all of that and get back to enjoying writing (as I was planning to do with the Warspite review) and trying to enjoy a game I still love dearly. I've had more than enough negativity this year to last me the rest of the decade, and I want to refocus on the things that I enjoy, that make me happy. Writing is still one of them, and it's about time I found a rhythm in it again.
This review may have been a bit of a mess, I realise, but that's all part of the Vaexa Review Experience:tm:; inconsistent messes that I write more-or-less without any sort of plan, totally on a whim. Wouldn't be me if it wasn't a clusterfuck.
If you've read the whole thing, congrats. I hope you enjoyed it. If you don't like anime and still enjoyed it, congrats for having an open mind. If you like Montpelier and didn't enjoy it, good. That's a joke, I shouldn't be too harsh. It's all just friendly ribbing.
As a final footnote, please don't shit up my review with ''anime sucks'' or ''wg's monetisation sucks''. People are allowed to enjoy whatever media they like, even if that's weeb shit like Azur Lane. It's fucking obnoxious to shit up threads with how much you hate weeb shit.
As for the second bit, we know WG's monetisation sucks. I fully agree with that sentiment, and I really wish they'd go back to offering items individually, but alas, just blow me down. Fuck.
As always, thanks for reading! If there's any funny markup, grammar or spelling errors, let me know and I'll fix it. <3

2020.07.23 18:49 Proper-Thought-4000 Speeding Ticket

Hi everyone,
I recently got a speeding ticket for driving at 83 in a speed limit of 65 in Westmoreland, Oneida County of New york. The officer said, had you been under 80 it would have been fine and he told me the charges would me mailed to me. However, all this while I waited but nothing came in my mail. I called up the court and they said first you have to mail the ticket you got with deciding if you are guilty or not. The lady i talked to said you can also reach out to us on email and if you chose that you are not guilty you still don't have to come to the court hearing.
Can anyone help me what should I do? I mean wouldn't I still need a lawyer to represent me in court.
Or should I just plead guilty and pay off the charges?
This is my first ticket, i used to live in Texas before and usually the points wont go onto your drivers license there as you could do a defensive driving course and get rid of it. I don't know if that works in New York.
I currently reside in Massachusetts, getting a ticket in New York doesn't necessarily affect your insurance here in Mass. Please correct me if i am wrong.
Any help would be appreciated. My court date is due next week.

2020.07.22 20:16 stickmaster_flex Why is the Performance Pro upload tier now apparently 5Mbps? Why is it so hard to find the upload speed?

I'm stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of support calls. I have Performance Pro, 200Mbps down, which I got specifically because the salesperson assured me that it had 10Mbps upload speed, and I didn't want to spend more to get to 25Mbps upload. As of a month ago (or thereabouts, I don't know the exact date) I noticed I was only getting 5Mbps upload, and that Comcast had removed all mention of upload speeds from my bill and other easily accessible sources.
I finally found this: https://www.xfinity.com/networkmanagement, which clearly shows the 200Mbps download tier corresponding to the 10Mbps upload tier. I spent several hours troubleshooting with Comcast support agents, and finally had a technician sent out today, who verified that my equipment and connection are all fine. He was able to find that Performance Pro is apparently now 5Mbps, but again, the official Comcast network management page shows 10Mbps. I'm still only getting 5Mbps upload speed. What gives?
For reference, I am in Massachusetts, north of Boston, in one of the many communities in which Comcast has a monopoly.

2020.07.21 04:45 ChevalMalFet Welcome Aboard the Harriet Lane, Day 8 (Final): Privateering and Blockade Running

Aftermath of Galveston
As the morning of New Year’s Day turned to afternoon, Galveston Harbor was a hive of activity for the first time in months.
The Union fleet had long since vanished over the horizon, and the victorious rebels were busy throughout the liberated city, hauling down the Stars and Stripes from over city hall, processing and marching the captured Massachusetts men off into captivity, treating the injured and dead aboard the Harriet Lane, and working to repair the Lane and the Bayou City, which remained entangled from the dawn battle.
The Lane had had its wheel broken by the Bayou City’s ram, and her engine shaft had been driven out of its bearings, so the vessel was immobilized. Many of her seams and started and she was taking on water, and she was listing badly as a result. The vessel was immobile and badly damaged, in no shape to pursue the fleeing Federal squadron as Admiral Smith initially ordered. A pair of unarmed tugboats, now that the harbor was clear, cautiously crept down and set to work, towing the entangled vessels to the wharf so the crew could be evacuated and repairs begun.
It took over a week of work by skilled smiths, directing crews composed largely of enslaved men, to render the vessel mobile again. Magruder constantly urged haste, knowing that as soon as the fleeing Federal squadron reported in at New Orleans, a large reinforcement could be expected to shut up the harbor again. Once repairs were more or less completed, he immediately ordered aboard a crew to prepare for a commerce-raiding cruise against the enemy at sea. However, legally this was impossible, since the Lane hadn’t yet been adjudicated by a prize court. Instead, she was slowly hauled up Galveston Bay towards Houston, where she would be out of reach of the Yankees. She grounded many times in those shallow waters, and a channel had to be dredged for her, so thatit wasn’t until late January that the Lane finally settled in at Buffalo Bayou, at the head of the bay, where she was judged a lawful prize and handed over to the Confederate Navy on March 10th.
The CSA was not impressed. While a nimble little guboat, the Lane’s little paddlewheel and small engine made her slow and inefficient - too slow to outrun the Union gunboats that made up the bulk of the blockading fleet. She would make a wretched blockade runner, and she was too small and slow to be much good as a commerce raider, either. She was fundamentally a revenue cutter, not a warship, and not suited for open warfare against modern warships like the Union navy had. The Confederate naval lieutenant dispatched to inspect Magruder’s prize recommended the Navy relinquish control over her.
For over a year, the Lane languished in Galveston Bay while the Union re-established its blockade outside the city, though they never again occupied the town as they had previously. The Lane spent more of the war with the CSA than she did flying US colors - a Union warship from April 1861 to January 1863, 21 months, but a rebel warship from January 1863 through the end of the war in April 1865, 28 months. But her career was much less dramatic as a rebel. There just wasn’t much open sea fighting left.
By the latter half of the war, the rebel coast had been almost completely shut up, except for a few major ports - Wilmington, Charleston, and Savannah on the Atlantic coast, Mobile and Galveston on the Gulf. The Union held a necklace of islands from Ship Island off the Delta all the way around to Fortress Monroe at Hampton Rods, and from these islands now fully hundreds of warships roamed constantly, hunting blockade runners. The rebel navy was mostly sunk, although at regular intervals the Confederates would finish an ironclad or a cottonclad and wreak havoc in the local waters for a few days or even a few months, but inevitably the Union would concentrate against the isolated monster ship and destroy her. In the West, on the rivers, in isolated bayous and up obscure streams steamers would become rams, but never in the numbers as in the spring of 1862. There were battles and adventures, deeds of great daring, courage, and endurance done, but Union naval supremacy was unchallenged.
I’m not going to go into the various battles and incidents throughout the war - the career of the Queen of the West, the trials and dramas on the Red River in 1863 and 1864, Confederate secret weapons like the Hunley or the Albemarle, more port battles like Hampton Roads and Galveston at places like Charleston and Mobile Bay (“Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!”), more island seizures like Battery Wagner and Fort Fisher. This series could go on for a year if I did. But it would be mostly the same sort of incidents as I have already related, although if you do want to know more about any of those, and you want me to be the person to tell you, feel free to ask. Instead, let us close with our focus on the Lane, her proposed use by the Confederates, and look at the last two aspects of the war at sea we haven’t touched on yet: privateering and blockade running.
Commerce Raiders
After the spring of 1862 passed, the Confederate Navy largely lost the ability to confront the Union navy in open battle in defense of their home waters. Instead, the main way the Confederates found to hit back at sea was in the old refuge of weaker naval powers dating back to the Peloponnesian War: commerce raiding. Quick, powerful cruisers were fitted out (mostly in Britain, officially as merchant ships and then OOPS some American bought it and stuck a bunch of guns on it, what can ya do) and loosed upon Yankee shipping around the globe. The Union in their turn sent out fast cruisers to run these raiders down, and single-ship actions were fought from the English Channel to the Pacific.
The most famous and successful Confederate raiders, of course, were the Florida and the Alabama. The Florida, built in Liverpool in early 1862, put to sea in the autumn of that year around the time the Harriet Lane first sailed to Galveston. In a two-year career she took 37 prizes, one of the highest totals ever, but she came to an ignominious end in Bahia Bay, Brazil - a daring US naval lieutenant ignored Brazilian sovereignty and led his men in a night attack on the raider, while her captain and half his crew were ashore trusting to Brazilian protection. Lt. Napoleon Collins was duly court-martialed and convicted, but Welles was so grateful for the end of the raider that he set aside the conviction.
The other famous raider was the Alabama. Also built in Liverpool that spring of 1862, she took advantage of the same loophole Florida and other Confederate cruisers did: by British law, it was perfectly legal to build a ship that in theory could be armed, so long as you didn’t actually arm her. No doubt Hull No. 290, as she was known under construction, raised some eyebrows with her reinforced decks (definitely not for bearing the weight of cannon, no sir) and armored magazines (for, umm...whales. Or something), but legally the British could do nothing (well, they could have if they were motivated, but again the Crown was perfectly happy to allow the United States as many problems as it could handle). So Hull 290 launched, sailed to international waters where a shipload of cannon were waiting for her, and commissioned as the CSS Alabama around the same time as Florida.
For nearly 2 years, the Alabama was the scourge of United States shipping. She roamed at will up and down the Atlantic, raiding in the Azores, ranging over to New England, merrily dancing away from pursuers and reaching the Gulf. She was rarely sighted, and when she was, her captain, Raphael Semmes, was always clever enough to engineer an escape over the horizon. She rarely encountered Union warships and when she did, it was on her terms. For example, in January 1863, she came upon the USS Hatteras as she steamed towards Galveston to help re-establish the blockade there.
Hatteras, sailing with the other 7 ships of the new blockading squadron, was ordered to pursue the unidentified ship. Alabama loped ahead, luring the steamer out about 20 miles, far from her cohorts, then allowed Hatteras to come alongside. Hatteras sent a boat over, expecting to find a British ship. When the boat captain hailed the ship and demanded they identify themselves, the crew roared, “We’re the Alabama!” and a short but sharp engagement commenced, as the two ships pounded each other for about 15 minutes. Hatteras was soon sinking and on fire, and she surrendered.
Capt. Semmes was a gentleman and generous with his prisoners. The crews were well-treated aboard the raider, until he could drop them off at a neutral port or on a neutral ship to carry them home. Leaving the Gulf, he wandered down to the South Atlantic, paused in South Africa (becoming the subject of an Afrikaans folk song in the process), and then headed to the East Indies. After cruising there, finally, in December, 1863, she prepared to head for the neutral port of Cherbourg, France, where rebel agents had arranged for some much-needed rest, repairs, and refits. Alabama had been at sea for 534 days out of 657, never visiting a single Confederate port. She boarded nearly 450 vessels, captured or burned 65 Union merchant ships, and took more than 2,000 prisoners without a single loss of life from either prisoners or her own crew.
After a lengthy voyage across the Indian Ocean, around the Horn of Africa, and back up the Atlantic, the Alabama arrived in Cherbourg on June 11, 1864. Three days later, the USS Kearsarge arrived off the port. Alabama was trapped and would have to fight her way out.
The Battle of Cherbourg
The Kearsarge was built in 1861 in Maine, part of the Union’s crash ship-building efforts. She was speedy and well-armed, designed specifically to hunt rebel commerce raiders. She had encountered Captain Semmes before - in 1862 they had blockaded the CSS Sumter, Semmes’ first command, in Gibraltar for months, until Semmes had been forced to abandon the ship and burn it. He had slipped from Gibraltar to the Azores, however, where he found the newly-built Hull No. 280 waiting for him. Since then, the Kearsarge had been one of a number of hunters chasing the Alabama without success, up and down the length of the Atlantic, most of the time chasing only ghosts and rumors. Now, though, she had gotten lucky and found the raider where she had no choice but to fight.
Semmes had every intention of fighting - he wouldn’t let the same fate as Sumter befall his beloved Alabama. He accordingly sent a message out to Kearsarge’s captain, John Winslow, "My intention is to fight the Kearsarge as soon as I can make the necessary arrangements. I hope these will not detain me more than until to-morrow or the morrow morning at farthest. I beg she will not depart until I am ready to go out. I have the honor to be Your obedient servant, R. Semmes, Captain." For five days, each captain relentlessly drilled his crew and prepared for the oncoming confrontation. Finally, on June 19th, the Alabama came out. The Kearsarge turned and politely sailed ahead of her for a few miles until they cleared French territorial waters, then, in the sight of thousands of onlookers aboard dozens of ships from many nations that had come out to watch the battle, the two ships turned and began their famous duel.
On paper they were evenly matched. Alabama mounted 3 32-pounders in broadside, backed by 2 heavy pivot guns. The Kearsarge had 2 32-pounders broadside, with 3 pivot guns. Unbeknownst to Alabama, Winslow had strung thick chains 3 layers deep along his sides, covered over with wooden planking painted black. This shipborne chainmail insulated him from the Alabama’s 32 pounders. Kearsarge also was better rested, and had fresh powder and shot for her guns, compared to Alabama, which had been run ragged in her long cruise. These advantages would prove decisive.
The two ships, having safely cleared French territorial waters (escorted by a French ironclad, which backed off once all the international niceties were seen to), commenced brawling. Initially they sailed right in at each other, then the battle devolved into a spiral as each ship attempted to cross the bows of the other and rake her with broadside fire from stem to stern. Seven times they circled each other, each time the circle getting smaller. Semmes fought in the old-school, Nelson style - Alabama fired early and often, counting on weight of metal to carry the day. Winslow was cooler - he held his fire until the rebel was close, then fired slow, deliberate, aimed shots.
The Federals were much better shots than the rebels, and that made all the difference. Alabama’s furious, rapid volleys managed only two hits, from the heavy guns - above the water line, neither threatening the vital machinery of the ship. By contrast, Alabama was riddled with fire. Seven times in a little over an hour they circled each other, and by the end of the hour the outcome was clear. The Confederate raider, with 20 dead and 20 more wounded, was going down. Semmes and his officers fled to a nearby British yacht, the Deerhound, which refused to turn them over to the Federals and instead fled to Southhampton. The remainder of the rebel crew were taken prisoner by the Kearsarge, which suffered only two men wounded from the two rebel hits.
The last legacy of the Alabama was a near-war between the US and Great Britain. American shippers demanded compensation for the millions of dollars in losses they suffered at the hands of British-built commerce raiders, and that compensation was the subject of diplomatic wrangling for years after the war. Settling the Alabama claims without war was one of the signal foreign policy successes of the administration of President Ulysses S. Grant (someday I’ll do a deep dive for the Motte on why Grant was actually one of our best Presidents).
The Confederates hoped that their commerce raiders would draw Union vessels away from the blockade (and you can imagine the noise that maritime insurers made in Welles’ ears during the war), but the Union remained steadfast and committed to the blockade. The massive northern shipbuilding industry turned out more than enough cruisers to run down the rebel raiders, and most were destroyed by the end of the war. However, the last rebel flag to come down was that of a raider, the CSS Shenandoah. Shenandoah learned of the surrender of the main armies, the assassination of Lincoln, and the capture of Jefferson Davis in August, 1865, 3 months after most of these events happened. Refusing to surrender at a US port, she instead sailed for Liverpool, where in November, 1865, the final Stars and Bars were lowered and the era of Confederate commerce raiders came to an end.
But the Harriet Lane was considered too slow and lightly armed for that exciting work. Back in the spring of ‘63, while the Florida, Alabama, Shenandoah, and others still terrorized the waves, it was thought she could do better service as a blockade runner.
The Blockade Runners
Even as the Union tentacles stretched around the Confederacy, the blockade was still largely ineffectual without holding the ports themselves. New Orleans accepted more than 300 blockade runners in the 10 months before its fall, or nearly one a day. Following the city’s capture, runners shifted their efforts to Mobile, Alabama, and then to Galveston after Mobile was at last taken in 1864. Typically, cargoes would arrive in neutral ships at ports like Nassau or Havana, where they would be loaded onto special ships for the run past the blockade. The runners were invariably British built, low-slung, high powered vessels. They would attempt to slip past at night or in foul weather, and, if spotted, run for either the port or the open sea. Dozens were captured, but dozens more were not. The SS Syren, for example, ran the blockade a record 33 times.
The Confederate’s miltiary was utterly dependent on the runners. There was no domestic capability for manufacturing cartridges or percussion caps at the start of the war, few domestic sources of coal, limited ability to manufacture rifles or cannon. The British cheerfully took up the task of arming the Confederacy, and hundreds of thousands of rifles and millions of rounds used to kill Union soldiers were ultimately sourced in London. I was astounded to learn that even between October 1864 and January 1865, while Wilmington was blockaded and under siege, nearly 70,000 rifles, 43 cannon, and tons of food, clothing, and other supplies slipped through the blockade and into the port. One runner even sailed through the midst of the 125-ship strong attacking fleet and successfully entered the port. The only way, ultimately, to choke off the Confederacy was to seize the ports themselves.
Those, however, were specially built runners. They were low-slung, long, with sidewheels to drive them through the water. They would even burn turpentine-soaked cotton, which, though bulkier than coal, burned at a higher temperature and gave faster speed. They were painted dark grey or white to blend into the night or the daytime horizon, and used expensive smokeless coal near land to lower their profile. Eventually their luck would run out and they would be caught, but every trip carrying expensive luxury goods (a major problem for the Confederacy - most runners were private vessels and carried what captains wanted, and small luxury items brought a higher return than bulky, cheap arms and ammunition) would more than pay for the cost of the ship.
Non-specialists, like the Harriet Lane, were less lucky. The Lane languished in Galveston for 15 months before finally daring the blockade in April, 1864. She was loaded with cotton, stripped of all armament, and made a dash for Havana. The Union could see and keep track of all ships in Galveston harbor, though, and her absence was immediately noted and a cruiser dispatched in pursuit - they knew where she must run. A warship was waiting for the Lane at Havana. She fled up the coast, but knew she must be caught. Instead, the rebels drove her to shore, beached her, fired her cargo, and fled inland.
The Lane survived her beaching, but was impounded by Spanish authorities for the duration. She sat, a useless hulk, in Havana for a year, finally returning to the US when the war ended. The authorities, now with ships coming out their ears - nearly 700, compared to less than 60 in 1861 - condemned her as unfit for naval use. The Harriet Lane became the Elliot Richie, an undistinguished cargo steamer. She sailed along the coast, carrying coal and “merchandise” back and forth. In 1881, 16 years of merchant service later, a fire broke out in her cargo hold of coal. The crew abandoned her and the ship burned and went down. That was the final end of the US Revenue Cutter Harriet Lane (1857 - 1881).
Retrospective
In her career, the Harriet Lane managed to participate in just about every major Union naval operation in the early years, and exemplified the nature of the war at sea. She fired the first shots of the conflict off Fort Sumter in April, 1861, and was there for the start of the Union island campaign at Hatteras in 1861. It would continue, against increasingly elaborate and well-defended fortifications, until the fall of Fort Fisher in North Carolina in January, 1865. She pulled blockade duty at Hampton Roads, leaving just before the eruption of the Virginia, and even took a Confederate blockade runner. She fought in the battles of New Orleans, at Vicksburg, and against the ram Arkansas on the Mississippi, emblematic of the many riverine battles during the 4-year conflict. She also participated in some of the many, many captures of Confederate ports during the war and was the central player in the battle of Galveston, the largest battle in Texas during the war. As a rebel, she was considered for service as a commerce raider like Alabama or Florida, but ultimately used as a blockade runner, making only one run past the blockade before being burned to avoid capture.
Like I said, I only touched on some of the many, many incidents of the war at sea. It’s not as well-remembered as the big battles at places like Gettysburg or Shiloh, but if anything the Union naval effort was even more critical to ending the war than the armies. It was the Navy that delivered the first successes in the war at places like Hatteras and New Orleans, and the Navy was essential to Grant’s victories at places like Donelson and Vicksburg. It was the Navy that did the long, weary, thankless work of the blockade, and Army and Navy men working together had their share of heroism and sacrifice, like the Wainwrights or the Leas. It’s not the glamorous side of the Civil War, but it was important, and I, at least, think it should be remembered. I did my own small part towards that here.
Thanks for coming along with me.
